Only blacks can understand blacks' need in community

Thursday, March 8, 2007 9:14 AM EST

I would like to respond to the person who wanted to know if I meant that blacks should hire just blacks. Yes, that is what I meant. I'm not saying this because I'm racist, because I'm not.
There's more white people in my family than might be in yours, if you're white. That article was written during Black History Month, a time when black people are honored and celebrated.

There's only about four or five black-owned businesses around this city.

They don't have any medical benefits or vacation plans to offer, so why would a white person feel discriminated against if they are not hired to work there?

Every business or office downtown has all white employees, no blacks. They pay good and have good benefits; you can get promoted to higher positions. The largest black-owned business is Billy Dee's, the new bar on Chapman Avenue. All other bars have white bartenders.

So is there something I'm missing? I've been here since I was 6 years old, and I never heard of a white person being discriminated against.

I look at it like this: A duck can't teach a rabbit how to swim. Our forefathers taught our parents and grandparents how to survive, and established great things. They invented just about everything used in the world day, and about the “covenant” between each other.

Can you teach my people about the black covenant?

" If Martin Luther King were alive today, he would be mortified at a statement like this. "I have a dream that one day the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood." How can we ever sit down at a table together if we aren't given the chance to enter the door? I am a white person, I would never ever give a job to someone based on color. White or Black, unless that white is the peice of paper describing their qualifications. This article is probably the most racist thing I've heard in a while. The title kills me," Only blacks can understand blacks' need in community". Blacks are not different from whites! We are all people! For crying out loud! "

" Listen to what you are saying. You make no sense. Who's fault is it that blacks can't pull their own weight in society. Stand up black people be proud and quit complaining. You will never get ahead following peolpe like Cherry and Sean Mclead who always pull out the race card. "

" Cherry Honey: please stop this nonsense. "Your" people are your own worst enemy. When are "you people" going to start being an asset to society instead of a burden. "

" Open your eyes Cherry discrimination is everywhere and it affects everyone. Starting right with your racist remarks. Blacks hiring Blacks, - funny you speak of how your fore-fathers treaded the way for your generation - exactly what were they fighting for 'segregation''equal rights for all, right?'. And here you write about segragating your people? Make sense? Not so much.. Maybe what you should be preaching self character... It is not the color ones skin Cherry that defines a person or gets them a job - it is character, education, drive and willingness to work for things. Not sitting around waiting for a handout and playing the all mighty victim as you do oh so well.. You get what you work for period, those who want will. The race card is played all to often and is played because of people like you who try to find fault in everyone else instead of where fault should be placed. "

" People preface their remarks with I 'm not a rascist because anytime you happen to have an opposing viewpoint on race ralations, the old paint brush of racist is smeared across your face. People are just plain wore out and tired of the blacks whining all the time about their situation. Heck, immigrants all over the world are pouring across our borders for one reason. Jobs that pay below or at minimum wage levels. They learn the language, follow customs but still retain their own and thrive over a short period of time. No handouts for generations, no moping about past wrongs, no crying about slavery. They just do it and work their way to prosperity. Rascism is another way of saying I want a handout. Taxpayers are sick and tired of hearing this nonsense. "

" It might just be my lone opinion, but when I hear someone say "there's more white people in my family than might be in yours, if you're white", it reminds me of what I've heard some white people say; "I'm not racist, but..." or "some of my best friends are black". There's nothing more transparent than someone trying to convince you they don't think a certain way when they actually do, their choice of words gives them away. And when you're saying that you think blacks should hire ONLY blacks, yes, that does make you a racist, as it would if a white person said whites should only hire whites. Employers should hire whoever is qualified for the position first and foremost, regardless of color of either the employer or prospective employee. To do any less is discrimination on the basis of color. "

" Everyone is created equal under God, but since God has been taken out of everything we are starting to see the affects! We all need to stick together and look out for one another... there is no discrimination card being played over in Iraq... Black Men and Women And White Men and Women are fighting this war together, Auburn is too caught up in HATE to see the big picture... Let's put God back in schools, homes, and everywhere else and we are sure to see the changes!! "

" As usual the black and white race war continues on with Ms. Love-Duncan talking about the black race missing out in life. After decades of the government spending billions of dollars to help lift people out of poverty the question arises of where did the money go. Generations later the problems still exist with black leaders ignoring the core problem of females having babies while they are still children and young males taking no responsibilty for their actions.Until that cycle stops the chain will never be broken. Other ethnic groups come to America who can't read or speak English with just the shirt on their back. Maybe welfare assistace at the start but no where to be found years later on public assistance. How do they work toward the American dream and the blacks linger behind for generations. Something is broken in the black leadership that accepts failure within their ranks. "

" Supplant "white" for "black" in this letter and see what happens. Ms. Duncan needs to get over her victim mentality. Is it the fault of the caucasian majority in Auburn that there are only 4 or 5 black owned business'? I would say no. Is it the caucasian majority's fault that most working in downtown are white? Maybe, just maybe they were qualified and applied for the job. Crazy isn't it? I didn't realize that business owners should go out of their way to search out black people that don't apply for their advertised positions or aren't qualified to do the job. My bad. "

" what is the percentage of afro-american students in our school district? of that percentage, what is the percentage of afro-americans that graduate from high school? of that percentage, how many go on to college? of that percentage, how many graduate? regardless of race or religion, i will not hire anyone without a college degree. should local businesses hire anyone not qualified to do the job? should an accounting firm hire a person, with nothing more than a GED, as an accountant? should amh hire a person with a GED as an RN? just what are you trying to say? hire afro-americans on color alone and not qualifications?
