Expanding mining would desecrate beautiful town

Wednesday, March 7, 2007 9:38 AM EST

I live on Chapman Road, not far from the proposed mining site expansion in Shepard Settlement in the Town of Skaneateles. Although I have been unable to go to the town meetings, two friends who do attend have kept me informed, and I follow the reports online.
I am horrified at the proposals on the table to increase the mining in any way, but the radical “orange” alternative is unconscionable. (Orange is the color used on the map depicting the area being considered.) Expanding mining operations as proposed would not only desecrate the historic cemetery, but would bring increased trucking and pollution to this peaceful, rural hamlet, which then would become one of the largest mining areas in Onondaga County. Those of us with homes here would not only see our property values decline, but we surely would find ourselves living in a rural slum, the natural beauty that attracted us to live here in the first place now destroyed.

The materials from the mine can be obtained elsewhere. If they need to be hauled in from farther away, perhaps at increased cost to town residents, the financial burden would be shared more equitably.

We do not deserve to have this degradation forced upon us and, frankly, it's insulting that this community essentially is considered to be expendable. I've noticed that the councilors in favor of the expansion do not live near the controversial area. Perhaps each of them would consider what it might be like to have this destruction take place near their homes (or, perhaps, their summer residences).

Concern for all residents of the town is what local government should be about.

" I apologize for a typo in my last message. The organization I referred is called the Shepard Settlement Neighborhood Association. "

" In an attempt to keep my original letter informative yet brief, I may have been unclear on some points. I hope these additional comments are helpful. There are several other mines in the Town of Skaneateles able to provide the same materials in question and share the burden. The existing Shepard Settlement mines will still continue to function, in any event. The proposed expansion is absolutely MASSIVE and unreasonable to expect from one small community. No one will dispute the need for trucks in our society, but 7 loads of stone an hour 6 days a week beginning at dawn is a lot to demand especially since, as I just mentioned, the materials also are available not far away. I did not say I don't have time to attend the town meetings. I said I am unable to, but my personal situation is not relevant here. I also said I have been kept informed of developments. The Town Board is aware of my concerns and those of the 70-member Shepard Settlement Association. I was asked to write this letter to share this information with others, but am disappointed at the unproductive nature and tone of some of the responses. I'd be happy to respond to any reasonable questions. If I don't know the answer, I'll find out. "

" Funny how the writers are hiding; they don't give their full names, where they live or if they have a vested interest in the mine operation. Is it a fairy tale that a "Man's home is his castle"? Or is a castle depending where you live and your possible connections. By the way, I have no vested interest in this mine. I no longer live in New York State. "

" This editorial is actually entertaining. According to the article, the writer doesn't have the time to attend a town meeting and express her concerns there so instead she decides to grace the entire circulation of the newspaper with her rants. Perhaps if the writer wanted to be more effective, she should attend a town meeting and direct her concerns there. "

" truck traffic is a fact of life, there are trucks on every road -they bring what we use every day things -try going without trucks -think things are pricey now without trucks to deliver -every thing goes UPPPPP "

" I don't believe the mine located near me was in operation when my house was built 35 years ago, but quite a few have been built nearby since and that's fine with me. However, they are closer to the disputed area and would have to tolerate the truck traffic and pollution problems much more than I would. I have yet to speak to anyone there who is happy about it. Would you like to live near it? "

" was the mine already there when you moved in >.If so your house most likely was built from the mined materail there -because it was cheap to transport -even if your house is [ie] old and the mine will provide materail for many more houses in the area or is that what you really don't want to happen .Transportion is the most costly part of mine materail "
