Two Cents

Why do you have to “Put your two cents in” but it's only “a penny for your thoughts?” Where's that extra penny going to?
If county Legislator Francis Mitchell thinks he's going to change the 12-year term limit law to a new law that gives all currently sitting county legislators a three four-year term new cycle, he's going to have to think hard about the public re-electing him. They should keep the term limit as it is now.

The county Legislature will reward the deputies for suing the taxpayers and resume paying John Chick because they just don't know how to fire him. I don't think we have ever had a more incompetent county government.

Now that Auburn High School principal David Roth has made it a point to more widely recognize and celebrate black history month, will he plan on doing the same for an Italian, Irish, Asian or any other ethnic groups' designated month? Oh, that's right, no other ethnic group has it's own designated month.

Gov. Spitzer's public relations department tells me that 72 percent of all New York state prison inmates are addicted to drugs and/or alcohol. What is Auburn doing about this?

" Every trash day everyone of us places our trash at the curb side with one goal. "TO GET RID OF IT" The majority of us couldn't care less where it goes as long as it goes. These men who make the runs throughout this city day after day, are some of the hardest working men the city has to offer. In all types of weather, rain, sleet, blizzard conditions of a hot muggy day, these men will be there to take you trash away. I would suggest thanking them instead of "flipping them off" A bottle of water, or a hot cup of coffee does wonders for these men. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen men working to replace a broken water main in freezing or muggy weather. I stop and either offer them cold water or a hot cup of coffee. I always get the same response from these hard working men. A huge thank you! Alot of appreciation. We owe them this. Every year they have had to do more with less personel. Every year they are the ones that are threatened with losing their jobs. It isnt too much to thank those who take our trash away, or make sure our water is flowing or the streets are plowed. "

" Ya know, Auburn is the ONLY city I have lived in during the past 7 years that doesnt charge for pick up. Yes the other places I lived charged everyone taxes, even higher taxes than Auburn, AND we had to buy sheets of trash tags so our garbage would be taken. It could be WORSE!! Also I have seen garbage men toss the recyclables right in the truck with the garbage, so much for recycling! Who knows what the recycle truck REALLY does with recyclables?? "

" In 1866, the 14th Amendment to the federal Constitution was passed, granting citizenship to the former slaves and changing them in the eyes of the law from 3/5 of a person to whole persons. Then, in 1869, the 15th Amendment granted the right to vote to black men, with most women of all races still unable to vote. WHERE IS WOMEN'S DAY? We've suffered worse than any Black Man. "

" Does the city have any way of recording how much water comes back into the wastewater treatment facility? Assuming that many factors could either make it more or less than what was sent out. But I'm sure that they have statistics from previous years. So maybe they should see if they're getting more or less back than usual, if they're getting less back, then perhaps maybe someone is stockpiling water, or for some unknown reason they are stealing it, and taking it out of Auburn, god knows why, but hey you never know. "

" Yes, there is an Hispanic American Month. Irish Catholics get St. Patrick's Day (not sure how Irish Protestants feel about that), the Italians get Columbus Day and though almost no one knows it, October 6 is German-American Day (and there are more Americans of Germanic heritage than any other single ethnic group). But there are plenty of other groups -- all of mine included (English, Scottish, Dutch, Polish, Swedish, French and Bohemian) who have no special recognition of our heritage. It gets silly after a while.... "

" As far as black history month--it is ridiculous. There are accomplishments of blacks that should be celebrated all year long. It was just something thrown together to satisfy a few complainers. Why can't we celebrate all ethnicities? "

" The city's water main's run directly under all the of the city streets. Accordingly, their are 108 miles of city streets, that Auburn maintains. However, the city also states that they provide fresh water to Auburn and surronding communities, yet they only claim that their is 108.8 miles of water mains. Does that make sense? "

" If any group wants to be recognized, I'm all for it! As for the Irish, don't we all celebrate St. Patrick's Day the whole month of March. There are parades, green beer and even a green line painted down some streets in larger cities. On St. Patrick's Day we are all Irish. What about Columbus Day? Don't we celebrate that? Italian-Americans use to have a parade here in Auburn. What happened to that? In the summer isn't there an Italian festival? May 5 - don't we celebrate Hispanic Americans? "

" The garbage men are lazy, they are in too much of a hurry. The quicker they get done with the route the quicker they can go home. It shouldn't be this way, they should have set hours. Then they wouldn't be in such of a hurry. I have had the wheels broke off 2 garbage cans because they hurl them on the sidewalk or driveway. Sometimes they are rolling down the street by the time we get home from work. They need to slow down. Is the City of Auburn going to buy me new garbage cans every other week. "

Pizza Boxes wrote on Mar 5, 2007 2:24 PM:

" The web site says, do not recycle Pizza Boxes, I guess you should put them in the clear plastic bags with the rest of your garbage, tied up, so the trash man can't pull them out. "

" Answer for taxpayer07 B'cuz the guy only has two hands, and he didn't feel like bending down again to get the third bag. I would have to say that laziness is the only reason he didn't take it. Unless, he needs glasses, but I doubt it was because of a vision problem. "

" the trash collection does get missed but it is because the bags may be covered with snow, hidden down in the snow partially, or mistakenly not seen. I had the same happen, however I called the landfill and they politely sent a vehicle out to get it. No harm done. Your tax dollars are hard at work really. They are more than accomodating. "
