We should go without meat, dairy all year long

Monday, March 5, 2007 9:42 AM EST

Lent is the 40-day period preceding Easter when Christians have traditionally abstained from meat and dairy in memory of Jesus' 40 days of fast and prayer before dying on the cross.
Jesus' powerful message of compassion and love for all living beings still applies in our time.

It's a time when animals are raised for food under abject conditions of caging, crowding, deprivation, drugging, mutilation and manhandling. When their wastes foul the water we drink and the air we breathe. When meat production accounts for 18 percent of greenhouse gases. When most chronic killer diseases are linked to consumption of animal products.

We can show our respect for Jesus' message by accepting a wholesome, nonviolent diet of vegetables, fruits and grains first mandated in Genesis I-29. Lent provides a splendid opportunity to explore meat- and dairy-free foods at our supermarket.

" Even Jesus couldn't keep me from my steak and baked potato with sour cream! Anything you eat in large quantities can be bad for you (try eating nothing but asparagus or broccoli for a few days, you'll see what I mean)... but meat and dairy in moderation is just fine when tempered with fruits, vegetables, and regular exercise. It's all about balance and moderation. "And the Lord did grin, and the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and orangutans and breakfast cereals and fruit bats and large chu--" "

" Let's keep religion as a personal belief. If you want to promote healthy foods do so. Let's keep my Savior, mine, personal, and within me on my personal day to day life. I have a Church (building) where I and my fellow believer's can go to worship, or say a simple prayer. Thank You. "
