School board members did nothing wrong at meeting

Monday, March 5, 2007 9:42 AM EST

The recent filing of a formal complaint by school board member Joseph Leogrande is the result of misguided zeal. His allegation states that an illegal meeting took place among three other school board members.
The three members state that during a social meeting for breakfast some school issues were mentioned and Mr. Leogrande was informed of this by the three members via e-mail.

Following Mr. Leogrande's Bolshevik thinking, they have been caught, they should confess and they should plead for forgiveness. They have rightfully denied any wrongdoing. Mr. Leogrande has invited the blunt instrument of state government to uncoil itself and settle this dispute.

I have to ask some questions. If the goal of an education is to dispel ignorance and replace it with what we believe is the truth, what is the best way to do it? Do our well-salaried education elites have an answer? Do they have an explanation for the failing government monopoly on education? Test results are published regularly and speak for themselves.

Members of the U.S. Congress meet informally outside of committees to discuss the important issues they have been charged with. There is not enough time in formal committees to possibly discuss all the nuances and variations of complex issues.

The process of self-government requires that citizens meet and discuss the direction and method they wish to take to achieve a desirable result. The former committee meeting is the distillation of research carried out by its members. There, members can formally approve or disapprove the informed opinions of their colleagues.

To restrict school board members from thinking out loud and sharing their thoughts and ideas outside board meetings is impractical if not impossible. Time and energy are precious commodities and should not be squandered on a witch hunt. Thank you to the school board members who have chosen to serve in a positive and gracious manner.

" On the contrary, I believe the quality of education should have surpassed all standards set by the state considering the amount of money the tax payers have been giving the school district year after year. Instead, we have our schools being placed on failure lists by NYS and we have an unprecedented drop out rate. This is not success. John Plume and his rubber stamp board have failed not only the community, but our children as well. So it is no with hunt that I am after. It is a quality education for our children, and it is accountability. Both, a required necessity if we are to all succeed. Instead we have more of an emphasis being placed on black history month, diversity, and the hiring of minority teachers instead of focusing on the real issues, like the drop out rate, and the declining graduation rate, and the falling SAT scores. While these issues may be important to some, it is not an important component to a quality education. John Plume and his board which is led by Mike Stearns has lost focus. As such they both need to go "

" Focus is what is displayed by "Through your eyes". Seems you would rather spend time and money on the witch hunt instead of improving education. Good solution to our problems. Glasses are a good solution for clarity. "

" Sorry Dave I disagree with you on this one. Mike Stearns and every member of the audit committee met and discussed committee business. This was admitted on air, although he (Stearns) played it off as a comment in passing. In truth they were trying to find a way to funnel questions and have the committee decide which questions were valid prior to being presented to the auditor for an answer. This is not their job Dave! In other words if you had a concern about the auditor, you would have had to present your question to the committee FIRST! Then if THEY thought that the question was valid they would then give it to Plume to answer. Totally circumventing the democratic process and ignoring the safe guards the state employed to prevent another theft of millions of dollars like the incident at Long Island. This is important Dave it is critical to have chacks and balances. Not bobble heads like Stearns "

" certainly says it's ok to violate public meeting law? Sorry David, but I and others are not of the same opinion. Far too much "crappy politics" happens in these closed meetings. And with the current status of the school district not hitting their marks points to even more vigilance on the part of ALL Auburn citizens to know what is said, discussed or planned in a public forum....not some back room or breakfast meeting.
