Compromise needed on West Barrier Bar

We're encouraged to see a new proposal to address long-standing problems at West Barrier Bar, and we hope a compromise can be reached as to exactly what should be done with the land.
The 14-acres of land near Little Sodus Bay on Lake Ontario have been both a blessing and curse for area residents for years.

The lakeside property has immeasurable value as a place for picnicking, fishing and other recreation but is also a favorite clandestine party spot for young people. Sporadic vandalism has thwarted efforts to keep workable restrooms at the park and visitors and neighbors have long complained about broken beer bottles on the grounds and cars speeding along the access road.

The property was deeded to Cayuga County by the state in 1988 with the understanding the land would be maintained as a public park, but county and local officials have complained for years that a lack of maintenance and security have made the park a place few families would want to visit.

Now, a committee made up of people from Sterling and the village of Fair Haven wants the county to begin turning over ownership of the park to the smaller municipalities.

Under the proposed plan, the town and village would manage the land and share the cost of trail improvements and signage. A part-time park steward would monitor the area for rowdy behavior and also help keep the park clean.

A 2005 proposal by an Oswego developer to build homes on the land met with strong disapproval, but even some of the people who have been most vocal about keeping major construction out of West Barrier Bar would still like to see more brush cleared and restrooms installed. Others would rather the property be kept in a more primitive state of natural beauty.

We're hopeful a compromise can be reached and that the park can become a clean and safe place to visit.
