AUBURN - After six years leading the Auburn Enlarged City School District, schools superintendent John Plume will step down.

John Plume, superintendent of the Auburn Enlarged City School District, speaks during the school board meeting at Auburn High School Tuesday evening.
Plume's short announcement came during a budget presentation at Tuesday night's regular school board meeting, and took board members momentarily aback.

He merely said this would likely be his last budget, leaving some members glancing at one another wide-eyed.

Even before he'd indicated his intent to the board, Plume had declared his plans to give notice on the public access

television program, “Inside

Government with Guy Cosentino.”

The announcement came after Cosentino asked Plume about his designs on retiring BOCES superintendent Gary Gilchrist's position. Gilchrist announced last month that he will retire after eight years leading the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES.

Plume said he had not applied for the position, but planned to deliver his last budget as superintendent this year. He refrained, however, from calling his departure a “retirement.”

“It's my last budget,” he told the host.

The show aired Tuesday night at 7 p.m., just as the Auburn school board meeting was beginning.

“I think we've had a good run,” Plume said after the meeting had adjourned. He cited rectifying a “huge” $600,000 budgetary gap since his tenure began in the spring of 2001 as one of his most important accomplishments.

“I think there's a good direction and a solid plan,” he said, suggesting he's begun to become weary of 60-plus hour work-weeks over 50 weeks a year.

“It gets to be a little enervating,” he said. “I'm at a point where I'm thinking I'm not sure I can do this particular pace for another year.”

Meanwhile, the superintendent is required to notify the district formally of his departure a few months ahead of time, a matter Plume said he has yet to address.

Plume will finish out the 2007-08 school year at Thornton Avenue, but isn't yet certain whether he will take another position in the Auburn school district, become a superintendent elsewhere or retire altogether.

Indicating his respect for Plume's leadership of the school district over the last six years, board president Michael Stearns said, “Since John Plume came on board, the district has taken a different tone. He always had logic and reasoning behind every proposition and resolution he's made.”

" John Plume is one of the most levelheaded, logical men I have ever met. It is clear in his dedication to his district and good-heartedness to his community. I am his daughter and just for the record, I used to beg him for snow days! Nine times out of ten, I had to go, but I turned out just fine. It is amazing what a jacket, hat and gloves can do! "

" Complainers are a dime a dozen. People who attempt to solve issues are worth the investment. I ignore all the complaints I read and hear. They are just people starving for attention. I listen to serious, objective, results orientated comments and suggestions and so should the Board of Education. "

" If your most significant complaint is snow days, then things must be extraordinarily good for Auburn. "

" Yes, anytime the temperature fell below 20 Plume should have closed the schools. Is that the best some of you idiots can come up with to criticize a man whose put thousands of hours into serving this district and community? Give me a break. I wonder if Plume is also responsible for all the dullard teenagers I see walking home wearing nothing but sweatshirts in the dead of winter. No Super is perfect, but Plume worked well with teachers, parents, and Board of Ed alike, and accomplished much. Believe me, compared to some of the Supers in other area districts, Plume was the cream of the crop. You'll miss him when he's gone. "

" Ha, he's not leaving the area... He's going for the BOCES head position where he can double his final salary average for retirement and screw them too! "

" John Plume has achieved little if any thing. This is an opportunity to learn from a big hiring mistake 6 years ago and to do better in the future. If he thinks he is negotiating a "please stay Johnny" package ... all I say is flush the toilet. "

" There were a couple of days where Auburn should have closed but did not. More for the money than for the childrens safety. This guy was a joke, so buh bye Mr. Plume. "

" this district produced great students before he arrived - - many of the current problems are stemming from his arrival, and the policies he brought. He did bring in some good, but for the most part his tenure was a failure. He should have fired Tam Ray years ago. "

" I hope he goes someplace warm so the kids won't have to worry about walking in extreme weather just for the state aid. Children should come before money! Glad to see him go...Good Riddens "

" Do you think that Mr. Plume wakes up and says " boy I hope that I fail the Auburn Community today". I hardly think so. I can't blaim him if he does. It is a thankless job to begin with, but in this town it is even worse. Thank you Mr. Plume for your dedication to our children. You should be proud of your accomplishments. "

Jerry Morgan Sr wrote on Feb 28, 2007 4:34 PM:

" Happy days are here again! Watch him fly off with his golden parachute. Once again he touts the $600,000 deficit as his greatest achievement. How sad. It's too bad he didn't think or care enough about the kids in this district to do something about the graduation rate. Its too bad he didn't care enough about the kids to address the drop out rate. It's too bad he didn't care enough about the kids in this district to get our schools removed from the list of schools that have produced sub standard test results from NYS. It's too bad he didn't think more about the general public in our district when it came to raising taxes. Please take your bobble head board members with you when you leave. They will be useless as they will not have anyone telling them how to vote, or to speak. Imagine the irony of a Auburn Board member having to actually make a decision on his or her own with out John Plume? "

Jim wrote on Feb 28, 2007 4:27 PM:

" The District was a shambles when John Plume was hired. The budget was a mess and purchasing pratices were questionable at best. I believe only a handful of people really know how bad things were at the time of Miller's dismissal. John's been a stabilizing force during his tenure and I want to thank him for a job well done. No matter what his next endeavor, I'm sure he'll do a great job. Good luck John. "

Matt wrote on Feb 28, 2007 1:29 PM:

" Plume has done a good job. He is an easy target for those who wish to place blame on him. What role does the teacher's association and its membership play in the low test scores? What role do Principal's and board members play? Responsibility for student success is not Plume's alone.Let's be fair when judging the Auburn School District. w "

Bottom Line wrote on Feb 28, 2007 1:03 PM:

" Any 'Super' is only good as the Teachers and Students that the system produces. I personally feel that the 'Super' position should be redefined to a SCHOOL SYSTEM SPECIALIST where the schools are managed by a Chief Of Staff type person with assistant 'Super's' handling the various departments. (Finance, Buildings, Transportation, Personnel, Instruction, Supplies-Equipment, and Food aspect) This system has no new jobs being created, just a realinement of responsibility. The various department chief's answer to the Chief of Staff (Asst. Superintendent) who only answer to the School System Specialist (Superintendent). This system free ups the "Specialist" to go about the district to get that first hand look at how the district is really running and perhaps allows that person to visit maybe a Kindergarden or two, to read to them a story or two. This 'Specialist' still answers to the School Board, community, and makes all final decisions within the school system. Basicly, free's up the ---behind the desk time---to more in the schools type position, where all 'Super's' really need to be more of. "

Truthfully I don't wrote on Feb 28, 2007 12:32 PM:

" think he's run out of "steam"...he never had it. The district will be better served with him gone. The State Dept. of Ed has put Auburn on the line for several items he had no intent to rectify. Why? Because he had no ideas how to make the changes and because he always made excuses Why these issues exhisited. Not the kind of leadership in the best interest for our district. No loss. Maybe now things will change. "
