Winter ends in the month of March, and hope springs eternal in the thespian breast of dozens of productions.
For those of you who have missed out on the Actor's Speakeasy troupe's work at the Auburn Public Theater, don't despair. The group plans two more productions for March and April. Jason Pikscher, who directed last weekend's excellent production, returns to direct the one act plays “Crash” and “Criminal Minds” March 30, 31 and April 1, also at the downtown theater.

Loose Ends is also at APT March 9 and 10 with A.R. Gurney's poignant “Love Letters.” March 10 is also the date to note a special matinee performance of The Kitchen Theatre's original family play “The Odyssey Part II,” at APT.

Syracuse Stage has August Wilson's “Gem of the Ocean” on the boards in Syracuse.

The play is the first in a cycle of 10 plays Wilson wrote, one for each decade of the 20th century.

It is directed by Timothy Douglas, whose previous work at Stage includes “Blues For an Alabama Sky,” “The Crucible” and “A Lesson Before Dying.”

The acclaimed Cazenovia Wit's End Players, within easy driving distance, will put on “The Fantasticks.”

They will be playing at the New Times Theater at the state fairgrounds through March 25.

If you need a theater fix this weekend, check out Geneva Theatre Guild's production of “I Do! I Do!” or The Kitchen's Counter Culture production of “Masquerade: Poems of Calypso and Home.”

Coming later this month are: “Hey, Naked Lady,” March 2 through March 11 by Onondaga Hillplayers; “The Octette Bridge Club,” March 9 through 24 by Appleseed Productions; “The Seagull,” March 15 through 24, at Le Moyne Boot and Buskin, and “Much is Blue About Nothing/ The Mysterious Messenger,” March 16 through 31, at the Open Hand Theater.

There are also a wide selection of scholastic performances on the horizon as well. “Once upon a Mattress“ will be presented this weekend by the Auburn High School Musical Theater group, while Skaneateles High School will take on Shakespeare's “A Midsummer Night's Dream.”

Next weekend sees Jordan-Elbridge High School's ”Hello Dolly!“ and Southern Cayuga Central School's ”Anything Goes.“ And a week later, ”All Shook Up“ comes to Dana L. West High School in Port Byron, while ”High School Musical“ takes the stage at Union Springs High School.

Seneca Community Players will hold auditions for five women and three men to act in its newest stage production, “Enchanted April,” a romantic comedy by Matthew Barber and based on the best-selling 1921 novel by Elizabeth von Armin. It will be directed by SCP veteran Becky Bly.

Auditions will be held at 7 tonight and March 1, at SCP's headquarters located in Building No. 91, canalside, behind the Fall Street buildings in Seneca Falls.

Interested individuals should come ready to act. Call Bly at 568-9364 or producer Pam Bryan at 568-8608 for details.
