Two Cents

Wednesday, February 21, 2007 9:15 AM EST

When we think of Oswego County, we might remember it not for its 12 feet of snow, but for the place where all the deer starved to death in 2007.
I know we're quite concerned about the quality of Owasco Lake. Wouldn't think it would be a good idea to be dumping snow with God knows what kind of chemicals into the outlet-inlet.

I think it's pretty sad that the students at Auburn tried to get more attention for Black History Month. If they really wanted to do something, they should have done it themselves.

Thank you so much for having this Two Cents column. It really gives people a chance to say what they want and it's just great.

There is always someone within the community who finds something to complain about! As for myself and many others who reside in the town of Aurelius, the employees' efforts and hard work toward keeping our roads clear during the winter months is very much appreciated.

The city of Auburn should scrap Bob Penafeather and his cable commission in favor of John Rossi and his team of corporation counsels. It's quite obvious that Penafeather can't get the job done.

" I saw only one thread in yesterdays postings that drew my concern. Being human its easy to think that only I matter. Sometimes I becomes we, as in "community". The holiday lights are entertaining, now in more ways than one, but still not important, to me. The burglaries in one small town, though important to your community(and you all could do something about it), are not really all that important, to me. The issue about plowing driveways, hell, do mine while you're at it. Politics... is politics, and deserves more attention, just not from me. But one person mentioned that the deer are starving to death up north, and I can imagine other wildlife is suffering as well. I really hope that someone is doing SOMETHING to help preserve this resource. If so; count me in! I would like to hear if anyone knows of organized programs to help the weather-beaten wildlife in our region. I would volunteer in a heartbeat. In the meantime I ask that others consider the plight of the deer and birds and do whatever you, personally, can to help the truly needy at this time. This is important, to me. "

Seems the city manager, has decided to go public, on the local news 10:00 pm that he wants to go from a boy to a girl.(this made top story) I don't have an issue with the surgery, my issue is with the fact that the city is hiring counselors (with my tax dollars) to counsel the staff of city hall. Shouldn't he/she be made to pay for the counselors out of his/her pocket due to the fact that the employees are going to be traumitized as a result of his/her surgery? Does this sound like a fair use of tax dollars? "

" In the 2000 census the population of Aurelius was 2,936 so obviously the number has gone up over the past 6 years. If plowing 4 (I repeat 4) driveways is that big of a deal then what the heck is this world coming too? There are more than 4 lives lost everyday in this useless war on terror. There are more than 4 pregnancy's aborted each day. There are more than 4 kids dropping out of school each day... Come on how little of a thing is this plowing thing, especially since how often had we even had to plow snow this winter? Let's all get our heads on straight and worry about the BIG picture here... Let's all go to the next Board meeting and just battle this stupid thing out, so we can put an end to it once and for all!! "

" No not involved much in politics, i do frequently walk the Avenues area and have seen neighborhood watch signs in some of the windows of homes. I just think that our Town Officials have done what they can to protect the residents of this Town. They have contracted with the Sheriff's Dept. for dedicated patrols, they did look into a Town police force at residents request but found that to be to costly and residents wouldn't want to pay for it. Since the Sheriffs Dept and State Police have been involved in investigating the burglaries here in town, I'm going to go out on a limb and say they are aware of the problem and would be taking the appropriate measures. I still maintain, why does someone else have to solve the problem for you? Be proactive, meet with your neighbors and set up a watch group, make sure you lock your doors and windows, buy an alarm system, get a dog, place your indoor lights on timers and your outdoor lights on motion sensors. There is a great deal YOU can do to make yourself feel more secure. I can't see laying this at the feet of our elected officials, they certainly can't arrest anyone. Two of them live in the general vicinity of the incidents, prevail upon them to bring the option of a community police force up for a vote, or public referendum. Just don't sit back and expect somebody to solve the problem for you, I learned many years ago it just never works that way. "

STEALING!!!!!!!!!!!! Any way you look at it. Their is no Justifiable explanation for it, other than THEFT. "

" Good grief -- who cares if people leave up their decorations? It's no skin off anyone's nose, it doesn't cost anyone else money and it's not an eyesore. If some folks take pleasure in the cheeriness of lights and decorations as the long gloomy winter months drag on, I say, good for them -- and anyone with Seasonal Affective Disorder. If some folks haven't got time or energy to take their decorations down and put them up again, year after year, and prefer to just leave them up year-round (like my dad did when I was a kid), it's no one's business but their own. And about the plowing -- another non-issue. If some of those guys have to plow their own drives so they can get out to plow the roads for everyone else, big deal -- I've see MUCH WORSE abuses of power than that for much more selfish reasons. There is indeed corruption out and about in the small towns which desperately needs to be exposed and corrected -- but a couple guys plowing their own drives the way which has been described here is no where near the worst of it. Pick your battles over things that are worth it, not the piddling nit-picky stuff. "

Come on buddy, we all pay taxes, but it's the shallow individuals like you that make big deals out of nothing.. if you have so much spare time why don't you send some money to the starving people in this world, or become a pen pal to a soldier over seas who has no one to communicate with? Leave this nonsense of who does what with tax dollars to the crows.. There is always some good that comes out of the bad, and the good that comes out of these snow storms is men like the employees of the Town of Aurelius who do make our roads safe for us to travel on.. I live in Owasco and see the signs for that in some areas windows. Have you called the Sheriff or State Police and voiced your concerns? Owasco already pays extra for a sheriffs patrol, if they aren't doing the job then complain to their boss! Are you willing to pay an increase in taxes for a Town police force? Do you have a personal problem with one or all of the Employees that you are trying to cause a problem for?
