Aurora post office patrons will have a chance to hear updated plans on a proposed move up Main Street at a Wednesday information meeting.
The U.S. Postal Service requested proposals and received one from Wells College for 371 Main St. late last year.

The Heary Building is the historic home to the village's post office.

“We've tentatively selected this site,” postal service spokeswoman Maureen Marion said. “There's still work to be done.”

Talks of moving from the current 373 Main St. office began in 2003.

The Aurora Foundation will renovate the Heary Building to suit. Foundation partner Wells owns the building.

In earlier stages of planning, some had worried about the village giving up ownership of the current post office, which would be demolished.

Others had questioned handicap accessibility at the historic 371 Main St. location.

Items like accessibility, parking and postal service needs will all be sized up in the impending site review phase.

“If the building becomes the accepted site, we'd like to move as soon as possible,” Marion said.

The current lease with the village still has a few years left on it, but the location poses some safety hazards.

“It's a tough dock to get in and out of,” Marion said. “It's not a very graceful or safe egress for us.”

In exchange for village approval of the move last March, the municipality will take ownership of or gain access to about 1,000 feet of Cayuga Lake frontage. Plans also call for 373 Main St. to be converted to a parking area with lake access after the move.

The Wednesday meeting will provide an overview of the next steps in the project.

“We'll go through the process from on forward,” Marion said.

" For the complete context and full background of Rowland's six year campaign to move our P.O. in order to expand her parking lot, please go to the website of the Aurora Coalition, Inc. The matter still has NOT been decided yet because some of us have mounted meaningful opposition to her plan. Don't just complain - go to the meeting, speak up, and put your concerns in writing to the USPS. "

" This Post Office matter was decided a year ago. Is this reporter new to this area? Missing altogether from this article is any mention of PLEASANT ROWLAND. In omitting her name and involvment, the article fails to disclose that it is Pleasant Rowland, thru the use of her phony "Foundation", who is behind this PO relocation. It is disgusting how Pleasant has misused the word foundation. And it is upsetting how many people, perhaps even the Citizen's reporter, have fallen for that misuse. Her " Foundation" is a development corporation. The most important detail in this article is not where Aurora's PO is located. Who cares? What matters here is that Pleasant Rowland will now be getting her hands on the last piece of real estate in the village downtown that she does not already own, completing her monopoly. And the bigger picture, and most important aspect of all in Rowland's dealings in Aurora has been how she has pitted neighbor against neighbor in all this, and how the once genial and supportive atmosphere present in Aurora before her arrival has been largely destroyed. Even those who support her can not deny that. For anyone reading this who lives outside of the village, please know that Aurora is now a divided, angry and decidedly unpleasant place, despite all the money spent by Rowland. "
