Aurora post office patrons will have a chance to hear updated plans on a proposed move up Main Street at a Wednesday information meeting.
The U.S. Postal Service requested proposals and received one from Wells College for 371 Main St. late last year.
The Heary Building is the historic home to the village's post office.
“We've tentatively selected this site,” postal service spokeswoman Maureen Marion said. “There's still work to be done.”
Talks of moving from the current 373 Main St. office began in 2003.
The Aurora Foundation will renovate the Heary Building to suit. Foundation partner Wells owns the building.
In earlier stages of planning, some had worried about the village giving up ownership of the current post office, which would be demolished.
Others had questioned handicap accessibility at the historic 371 Main St. location.
Items like accessibility, parking and postal service needs will all be sized up in the impending site review phase.
“If the building becomes the accepted site, we'd like to move as soon as possible,” Marion said.
The current lease with the village still has a few years left on it, but the location poses some safety hazards.
“It's a tough dock to get in and out of,” Marion said. “It's not a very graceful or safe egress for us.”
In exchange for village approval of the move last March, the municipality will take ownership of or gain access to about 1,000 feet of Cayuga Lake frontage. Plans also call for 373 Main St. to be converted to a parking area with lake access after the move.
The Wednesday meeting will provide an overview of the next steps in the project.
“We'll go through the process from on forward,” Marion said.
