Kaitlin Hammersley and Markie Kreplin made a big one.
Kreplin led all scorers with 19 points, and Hammersley poured in 15 more as the Warriors topped Cato-Meridian 41-32 Monday night.
Both Weedsport (13-6) and Cato-Meridian (5-15) are awaiting the postseason seedings, which will be released tonight.
“They have some big girls,” Blue Devils coach Charlie Balog said of Weedsport. “They were getting some open looks inside.”
Balog hopes a rematch with the Warriors is in store come playoff time.
“It'd be nice to see them again,” he said. “We'd like to get another crack at them.”
Monday's win was the second of the season for the Warriors over the Blue Devils, who fell to Weedsport 49-25 on Dec. 8.
The drastic difference in score is one Balog looks to as an example of his team's progress.
“We're definitely improved,” Balog said. “That's nice to see.”
Balog pointed to his team's perimeter shooting as a major point of improvement, and it helps now that he has his starting point guard healthy. But the Blue Devils still need to work on consistency.
It wasn't there in the third quarter on Monday.
The Warriors came out strong Monday and grabbed an 11-8 lead after the first quarter. The margin was the same at halftime, with Weedsport on top 22-18. But the third quarter gave the Warriors a cushion.
“That was the difference in the game,” Balog said, in reference to his team being outscored 9-3 in the third frame.
The Blue Devils managed 11 points to Weedsport's 10 in the final quarter, but it wasn't enough.
It didn't help that the Warriors were fighting their way to the foul line - and finding success. They were 12-of-19 from the charity stripe, compared to Cato-Meridian's 6-of-12.
Rachel VanNorstrand led the Blue Devils with 11 points, Jessica Griffiths added five, and Ashley Gillis, Amber Grader and Brittany Haskins had four apiece.
