I have been upset for some time with your “Two Cents” feature in the local paper.
I have refrained from writing by heeding the admonition from Mark Twain to “never pick a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel.”
Nonetheless, I think your decision to print anonymous tidbits should be revisited.
I believe this community is ill-served by this feature which is, by the way, taking over your paper!
More and more space is being given to poorly written drivel peppered with innuendo and snide comments directed at individuals who are maligned by name.
The anonymity invites abuse.
Can you possibly believe this serves
a constructive purpose in the
community? You do have some
responsibility as a community newspaper.
And, since you have editorially lamented the difficulty in getting capable citizens to consider public service, it might occur to you that the local paper and this feature in particular are part of the reason good people hesitate to come forward.
Who needs that kind of grief?
I realize that this kind of thing may sell papers.
It is sad commentary.
I would hope that your management or editorial staff would evaluate what might be done by the local newspaper to raise the level of discourse.
There is something very illogical about a newspaper which spends a good deal of time and effort to verify the authorship of signed letters to the editor and then prints what is essentially an anonymous gossipy bulletin board.
