AUBURN - A Fulton woman was sentenced in Cayuga County Court Thursday to four weekends in county jail and three years probation for her role in two northern Cayuga County burglaries.
Jennifer Troup, 21, of 37 Muckey Road, was sentenced for the misdemeanors of second-degree criminal trespass and petit larceny, which had been reduced from felony burglary charges as part of a plea bargain.
Troup admitted driving her co-defendants, who broke into the Bay Breeze Mini Golf in Fair Haven June 1 and a Fancher Avenue, Sterling, residence sometime between May 15 and June 19.
“Having seen her at grand jury, she is not a leader here but a follower,” Chief Assistant District Attorney Jon Budelmann said.
“I realize I should not have allowed my vehicle to go anywhere ... If I had to, I'd go back in time to undo it,” Troup said.
It wasn't just Troup's car that was used by so-called friends but Troup herself was used, Judge Thomas Leone said.
He said she should be thankful to her attorney, Al Pola, and the “graciousness” of the district attorney's office that her charges were reduced to misdemeanors.
“I'm certain you caught a break here,” Leone said.
Troup, who is pregnant, must pay $100 in restitution to the mini golf and $60 in restitution to the resident.
Troup was represented by Pola, an attorney and instructor for the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES New Visions Legal Professions program. Students in the program directly work on cases of defendants that Pola represents. Pola said they helped with case background and case law research and interviewed witnesses.
The cases are usually misdemeanor cases, but this was a rare case that started as a felony that students worked on, Pola said.
Troup's co-defendants, Ernest Ostrom, 21, of 14647 Center Road, Sterling; Dustin Johnson, with a last known address of 37 Muckey Road, Fulton, currently held in Oswego County Correctional Facility; and Theodore “T.J.” Lange, 19, of 962 Cayuga St., Hannibal, still have their cases pending.
