State environmental officials were determining Monday how much impact a weekend fuel oil spill near the Owasco Inlet will have on drinking water from the nearby lake.
A Suburban Propane tanker overturned near the waterway off of Route 38 in the town of Groton, spilling as much as 800 gallons of fuel oil Saturday night.
“At this point it's difficult to determine how much petroleum went into the inlet,” state Department of Environmental Conservation spokeswoman Diane Carlton said.
With cleanup hampered by the cold weather, the DEC did not expect to conclude its investigation until today.
Tompkins County Sheriff's deputies ticketed truck driver Ryan L. Getz, 60, of Pitcher, for failure to keep right. About 500 gallons of kerosene also on board did not spill, deputies said.
Owasco Lake is the drinking water source for more than 45,000 in Cayuga County. County Environmental Health Director Eileen O'Connor said she did not expect any report of contamination.
