Local farmer wins corn growing award
Norman Vaill of Vaill Acres in Poplar Ridge recently won first place in the 2006 National Corn Growers Association's corn yield contest in New York. Vaill took first place in the competition's ridge till non-irrigated division, taking one of 333 state titles won by growers planting Pioneer brand hybrids. Vaill's hybrid yielded 179.89 bushels per acre.
The corn yield contest is an annual competition among corn producers with the goal of producing the highest yields. Growers compete within a broad range of corn production classes.
Vaill planted the winning entry on April 28, 2006, in fields grown to soybeans in 2005. He planted the crop into 30-inch rows using a JD 7000 12-row planter at a rate of 34,250 seeds per acre. He used a Gleaner L3 combine to harvest the winning plot on Oct. 16, 2006.
