Each Wednesday, The Citizen features someone in the food services industry from the Finger Lakes community in The Banks:
This week, we spotlight Burt Vanderwerff of Wendy's.
Q. What is the one food you cannot live without? Why?
A. My grandma's macaroni, it's the best.
Q. Fill in the blank. People would be surprised to know that even though I work in the food industry, when I am at home in the kitchen, I __________.
A. I actually make hamburgers at home, too.
Q. What do you like most about living and working in the Finger Lakes region?
A. New places like Home Depot and Chili's are coming in, so there's more opportunity. The area's pretty quiet, too, I guess.
Q. If you were given $1 million to open your own restaurant or bar, describe the bar or restaurant and what type of food you would serve.
A. It'd be an Italian restaurant. I'd open it with Gina Kilmer, who also works here, as a co-manager.
Q. Where would it be located? Why?
A. New York City, it's big and I like how busy it is.
Q. On the day of your restaurant/bar's grand opening, if you could select anyone in the world to be your first three guests, who would they be?
A. My grandparents and my parents.
Q. Describe your most embarrassing moment while working on the job.
A. One time I dropped an old lady's food while I was carrying it out to the dining room for her.
Q. What is your favorite junk food?
A. Pizza.
Q. What have you learned are the top three ways to run a successful food business?
A. Teamwork, leadership and cooperation.
Q. If you weren't working in the food business what would you like to be doing?
A. I want to be a lawyer.
