On Jan. 23, the Auburn community lost one of its finest educators, Matthew Carnicelli. Before his retirement, Matt spent most of his career teaching physics at Auburn High School. (Matt spent the latter part of his career as science coordinator for the Auburn Enlarged City School District.) Matt was a treasure trove of knowledge, not only in physics, but in all areas of science. Matt was an invaluable resource for new and veteran teachers alike. He was the science department's “go to” guy.
Matt's passion for science was best manifested in the classroom where his infectious enthusiasm inspired many of his students to pursue science-related careers. He brought his classroom to life with endless demonstrations and anecdotes. Matt had that rare gift to take difficult topics and present them in ways that made them easy to understand. Matt initiated and became the instructor for the Gifted and Talented Program for Elementary Schools. He was provided ample compensation for this voluntary duty in the form of giggles and looks of wonderment on young faces during science demonstrations.
When Matt retired, his passion for teaching drew him back into the classroom as a substitute teacher. Science department members were delighted to have this wonderful resource available for their classes.
On Jan. 23, the Auburn community lost one of its finest educators, but his talent, knowledge and skills will live on through his colleagues and the thousands of students who filled his classrooms.
