AUBURN -- Sandra Craner, Executive Director of the Downtown Auburn Business Improvement District, announced Thursday morning that she will step down from her position within the next few months. She will continue in her role while a replacement is appointed by a special search committee.
Craner will pursue other opportunities once she leaves the position, which she has held for five years. During that time, Craner oversaw several significant improvements to downtown Auburn. She secured two $200,000 New York Main Street Grants for the city and oversaw the creation of a downtown beautification crew.
"The cleaning crew we've been able to put together and have on full-time has helped keep the face of downtown Auburn nice and clean," Craner said. "And the Main Street money has helped with the updating of properties in downtown."
The improvements to downtown instigated by Craner have helped attract customers to Auburn businesses, such as Speno Music Inc. on 3 E. Genesee St.
"She had an impact on the overall improvement of downtown by her dedication and perseverance working with the city," said Speno Music, Inc. co-owner Nick Speno.
Speno's co-owner and son, Mike, added that under Craner, the B.I.D. has "improved the overall appearance of downtown."
Because of Craner's work, Liberty Store owner Marty Goldman has found it easier to run his clothing shop on 5 E. Genesee St.
"They've coordinated efforts to promote downtown by petitioning with the legislature and city council, and that's one less thing for us to have to do," Goldman said.
The search for Craner's replacement will be led by Search Committee Chair Henry MacDonald. The committee will be seeking candidates with the most promise of continuing what Craner started by changing the face of the city.
"Whoever we pick will have a large set of shoes to fill," MacDonald said. "We have to look at what's the best choice for the city of Auburn."
