Started five years ago at the home of Joan Haff, the Scrap Happy Friends gathered to enjoy each other's company and refine a skill they all took pride in. Since then, the group of nine has crafted hundreds of quilts and even more memories.
“We are not a quilting guild. We're just an informal group of good friends,” Haff said.
Scrap Happy Friends will share its passion with the community with a compilation of quilts made by members and local quilters at the Winter Wonderland of Quilts Saturday, at the First Presbyterian Church of Auburn.
For the show, Scrap Happy has assembled a display of Friendship Quilts, in which each member created nine blocks of the same pattern and exchanged them with other members to create nine unique quilts with a piece of each member encased.
“We hope that (the show) will be an opportunity for the community to come share a love of quilting. Unlike the quilt shows at the Schweinfurth,” where they showcase nationally renowned works of art, Haff said, “we showcase works of love.”
Participants can anticipate members answering questions, and demonstrations will be given on patterns and techniques, Haff said. Local quilting enthusiasts are welcome and encouraged to submit quilts to the show, and will need to bring them in the morning to fill out display cards.
“It's a chance to see how easy quilting can be, it doesn't have to be overwhelming,” said Pat Messina, a Scrap Happy Friends member.
Messina said most quilts have been hand made. Finished products and works-in-progress will be on display.
“There will be a wide variety of projects from table runners - very narrow - to king-size bed quilts,” she said.
