Treasure trove

The 22nd annual Salt City Antiques Show at the New York State Fairgrounds will have treasure hunters and fun seekers in mind this weekend.
“We like to say the show is really set up for the serious collectors to the curious collectors,” show spokesman Steve Kukowski said. “It's a good diversion for the weekend.”

“It's just fun to look around if you're not looking for a particular piece,” he said.

More than 275 dealers will converge on the Verizon Center of Progress Building starting Friday.

The event is an outgrowth of the Madison-Bouckville Outdoor Antiques Show, an August event in Bouckville that has grown to more than 1,000 dealers over three decades. There's also an autumn addition of the Salt City show in October.

“There's a lot of know-how and experience behind all three shows,” Kukowski said. “The winter show sort of serves as the official launch of antiquing for the new year.”

Showgoers will have the opportunity to give some new life to their own collectibles with West Lake Conservators on hand for the first time this year.

The Skaneateles restoration and preservation experts will be providing free consultations through Sunday.

“It just adds another facet to the show rather than folks just coming in, looking at things, buying and leaving,” Kukowski said.

Timothy W. Conroy & Associates, Baldwinsville, will also have a spot at the show where the firm will offer free appraisals.

“They'll get to sit down and talk about the history of the item,” Kukowski said. “It's a good way to find out what a family heirloom might be worth or you might pick something up at another antique show or from a garage sale and not know the value.”

“This gives them a little information on the item,” he said.

In addition, thousands of items, including furniture, paintings, rugs, books, tableware, toys and jewelry will be for sale.

“The event enables showgoers to choose from a huge selection of quality antiques and collectibles, discuss the preservation of their items with professional conservators and take advantage of the glass repair and polishing service,” show director Jock Hengst said in a press release.

With 80,000 square feet of space, there will be plenty of room to move around, Kukowski said. Free parking, shuttle and porter service will also be available.
