Homegrown delicacies

AURELIUS - The smell of home-cooked foods permeated the Fingerlakes Mall food court Saturday.
Children wearing aprons and chef's hats cut vegetables, mixed batter and decorated the tops of desserts for the Cornell Cooperative Extension's 4-H “Produced in New York” show Saturday.

Children were busy preparing a perfected recipe using at least one ingredient made, produced or manufactured in New York.

Both Seneca and Cayuga County 4-H clubs participated in the four-hour cook-off that gives children the opportunity to prepare and present their food to the public and for judges to score.

Throughout the show children waited for their turn to use one of 12 stations where judges score the preparation and presentation of each food.

Children who weren't preparing their recipe sat in the food court dining area opening their ingredients and putting on their aprons.

Participants were required to bring their own food and materials to cook. Baked goods could be prepared ahead of time as long as the children prepared most of the recipe for judges at the show.

Once the food was prepared, the chef took the item to a table of taste-testers where it was scored based on its display, texture, and of course, taste.

“The event shows a great camaraderie of adults and children,” said Linda Lunkenheimer, event coordinator for the Cayuga County 4-H for seven years. “I like seeing the bystanders who are walking by but stop to watch what's going on.”

Allison Parker, made an apple pie from New York apples. Other participants cooked deviled eggs, chicken alfredo and corn chowder.

Children ages 5 to 18 could cook in the show.

Emily Clark, 11, of the Cayuga 4-H, was at the show with her mother Saturday afternoon. Clark, who has cooked in this show before was baking a streusel-topped apple crisp. She used to help her mother make the recipe, but now makes it on her own.

“I like the fact that I get to bake and it gives me a chance to do a 4-H activity,” Clark said.
