HIT: Perhaps we should wait until we actually see the work starting, but we're encouraged nonetheless by the report from city officials that they should be putting the East Genesee Street reconstruction project out to bid within a few weeks.
This long overdue project, which has been going through the state's ultra-slow bureaucracy, will be an inconvenience for a while, but once finished should be a huge improvement for this city. East Genesee Street is a major route in this city, and its current condition is simply miserable.
HIT: To the “Be an 11” program hosted for area youth by the Jordan-Elbridge Central School District on Saturday.
Using a combination of motivational speakers and physical exercise, the program can only benefit the boys and girls who participated. The Jordan-Elbridge Community Sports Booster Club did well to fund this endeavor.
MISS: While some of us may be enjoying the disappearance of the typically bitter-cold temperatures this time of year, the warm spells of recent weeks have not been helpful for many area commercial growers.
Many plants grown by our area farmers actually need that dormant time of year in order to grow properly in the spring. Animals are going through their feed supplies faster. And at least one crop - grapes used in making ice wine - needs freezing temperatures in order to be useful.
Most farmers, who often can have their bottom lines made or broken by the weather - are hoping for a return to normal for at least a couple of months.
HIT: While he may shy away from the attention, Union Springs native Ryan Vanderhoof has done his hometown proud.
Vanderhoof is part of Akron/Family, an emerging band that has appeared on “The Late Show” with David Letterman and been mentioned in Rolling Stone magazine.
