SKANEATELES - The task force dedicated to keeping hazardous waste trucks off local roads is turning its attention to state representatives to keep momentum behind federal legislation.
The village Board of Trustees offered its official backing to the movement with a resolution Monday. The Upstate New York Safety Coalition Task Force, which includes Skaneateles Mayor Robert Green and representatives from many local municipalities, is leading the campaign to further legislation introduced by U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer last year.

“I'd love to see something happen in 2007,” Green said. “We have really cranked up the pressure. The proposal has to come from our state government.”

The proposed law would confine trucks hauling hazardous materials, including municipal waste, to Interstates 81 and 90. Schumer has also proposed the Department of Transportation require all states to establish truck routes.

“We're trying to pressure Sen. Schumer to step it up and go forward,” Green told trustees after a 5-0 vote passing the resolution.

Trustees also lent unanimous support to a state Community Development Block Grant application that would extend a Fennell Street water line to the village boundary and Gateway senior housing.

The grant, worth up to $100,000, would also fund a sidewalk extension along Fennell Street to the village limits.

The village has not been very successful in getting the grant primarily intended for projects in low-income communities.

“It really has to be focused on seniors and the physically disabled,” Trustee Alan Dolmatch said.

The board set a public hearing on the application for Feb. 12.

In other news:

€ Approved use of land for a trail that will connect the Butters Farm neighborhood between Jordan and State streets to the Skaneateles Community Center. The 6-foot-wide, wood chip-based trail would be maintained by the Butters Farm Homeowners Association.

€ Set a public hearing to restrict parking near First Presbyterian Church.

On Feb. 12, trustees will consider eliminating parking between two church driveways on East Genesee Street that block the line of vision. The curb area in question is enough space for two cars.

" Mr. Welch makes a valid point. They are only coming through these local towns to avoid inspections. Going through 20, 30 and 40 zones cannot save time or money. Esp. with current fuel prices. What are they trying to hide? No one is saying that all trucks should be illegal. But I don't understand the mentality that they should not have to obey traffic laws??? And that makes anyone who says anything a snob?? Very ignorant thinking. They speed, have oversize loads, come into your lane, talk on cellphones, litter AND TAILGATING!!! Do these truck drivers realize that if you have to slam on your brakes for a deer etc that they will not be able to stop and will hit the car in front of them?? What's the survival rate of that if you are in a car? Tailgating is illegal. And I thought that was common sense not to. I saw a truck yesteray that literally had garbage flying off it-the tarp was ripped in half. I obey the traffic laws. Why should being a truck driver make you exempt from this? There's a police estimate that they are going approx. 30 miles over the speed limit in the 55 zones on 41 and 41A. They should get to do that because they are truckers???? Also, how are weigh stations harrassment?? When the highways are damaged prematurely from overweight loads taxes go up to fix them. That's why there is weight restrictions in place. This is not a Skaneateles issue. This is a CNY safety issue. Oh and one last thing -is the school bus driving by your house breaking numerous traffic laws? "

" Being a retired truck driver myself, hauling doubles in the East Coast and Locally. I feel it is not only Skaneateles that is suffering from these garbage trucks running all night and day on our streets and roads, tearing them up with overweight loads. They use the back roads to avoid the DOT checks on Rt 81. There is no excuse for not using 81, and Rt 90 to reach Seneca Meadows Land fill as Rt 81 is a non toll road and the Thruway, Rt 90 although it is a toll road, the shippers pay the costs not the truckers. Take it from a old hand there will be truckers around to haul the loads period. As far as John's article about School buses it way out of line. And Joe's article-- "The trucks WILL keep moving with or without Joe." If you really want to do something to stop all this, get everyone together and close Seneca Meadows, who needs New York City garbage in beautiful upstate New York. "

" The trucks that all these articles are talking about are those nasty/stinking Seneca Meadows bound TRASH trucks. They barrel around our lakes and residencial streets ruining the quality of life. Trucks that need to make local deliveries for products are fine and not a subject of controversy. "

" THE SAYING GOES, WITH OUT TRUCKS ,YOU WOULD BE HUNGRY, HOMELESS, AND NAKED. IF THE PEOPLE OF SKANEATELES WANT SOMETHING MEANINGFUL TO WORRY ABOUT, WHY DON'T YOU UPDATE YOUR SCHOOLS. I WAS DISAPPOINTED WITH THE WAY THE MIDDLE SCHOOL GYM WAS. NO BLEACHERS TO SIT ON. "

" A Skaneateles school bus goes by my home in Auburn every day, i guess i will start to lobby for that bus not to pass by my home due to it carries fuel and that is hazardous waste if the bus tipped over in my front yard, come on Skaneateles, get of your high horse and come down to reality, your precious little town is not all that!!!! and being a truck driver my self....keep going and you might not find any drivers willing to go to your town at all......but then there would be no Skaneateles .
