SKANEATELES - The task force dedicated to keeping hazardous waste trucks off local roads is turning its attention to state representatives to keep momentum behind federal legislation.
The village Board of Trustees offered its official backing to the movement with a resolution Monday. The Upstate New York Safety Coalition Task Force, which includes Skaneateles Mayor Robert Green and representatives from many local municipalities, is leading the campaign to further legislation introduced by U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer last year.
“I'd love to see something happen in 2007,” Green said. “We have really cranked up the pressure. The proposal has to come from our state government.”
The proposed law would confine trucks hauling hazardous materials, including municipal waste, to Interstates 81 and 90. Schumer has also proposed the Department of Transportation require all states to establish truck routes.
“We're trying to pressure Sen. Schumer to step it up and go forward,” Green told trustees after a 5-0 vote passing the resolution.
Trustees also lent unanimous support to a state Community Development Block Grant application that would extend a Fennell Street water line to the village boundary and Gateway senior housing.
The grant, worth up to $100,000, would also fund a sidewalk extension along Fennell Street to the village limits.
The village has not been very successful in getting the grant primarily intended for projects in low-income communities.
“It really has to be focused on seniors and the physically disabled,” Trustee Alan Dolmatch said.
The board set a public hearing on the application for Feb. 12.
In other news:
€ Approved use of land for a trail that will connect the Butters Farm neighborhood between Jordan and State streets to the Skaneateles Community Center. The 6-foot-wide, wood chip-based trail would be maintained by the Butters Farm Homeowners Association.
€ Set a public hearing to restrict parking near First Presbyterian Church.
On Feb. 12, trustees will consider eliminating parking between two church driveways on East Genesee Street that block the line of vision. The curb area in question is enough space for two cars.
