The Maroons' 68-62 victory over the Cyclones was one of the best in recent memory for the team for several reasons. In addition to seven assists, Auburn sophomore Kelly Grinnell scored a career-high 27 points, including six 3-pointers. And speaking of 3-point shots, the Maroons set a school record in that category, with 10 of them.
“This was so huge for us,” Auburn coach Gary Grinnell said. “Especially since they were coming off seven straight wins, this was just so good for the team.”
The Cyclones had also beaten the Maroons by three points in each of the last three seasons, including a 57-54 win on Dec. 23.
After being down 34-30 at intermission, the Maroons tallied 38 points in the second half. They were up two points going into the fourth, but after falling behind five, Auburn went on a 14-4 run midway through the final quarter to take the game in exciting fashion.
They were also able to control 6-foot Watertown center Brittany Patenaude in the second half, who finished with 29 points after recording 19 in the first meeting.
“She scored 18 in the first half, so stopping her was big,” Gary Grinnell said. “She was just killing us in the first half.”
Auburn senior Molly Grinnell tallied three 3-pointers for all of her points and Amanda Daum had one in her 14 points.
“When we shoot the 3's like we know how to, we can play with anybody in this league,” Gary Grinnell said.
Caitlyn Jacobs also recorded 11 points and six steals, while Daum also had 11 rebounds. Midway through the season, Auburn has already eclipsed last season's entire win total (five) with a 6-4 record. They will try to make it two in a row when they head to Baldwinsville on Friday.
