On behalf of the landfill, people get their trucks weighed, then they go dump the load of trash and then pick up scrap metal and go back and get their truck re-weighed. The attendants don't notice because they have racks on their truck and it's cheating.
I found Murray Lynch's statement that the Pope is the closest person to God both the scariest and funniest thing he's said all year. God help all Catholics if that's true.

Tim Lattimore and Matt Smith are providing the only embarrassment to the city. Thank God for the three Democratic council people that are there to straighten out the mistakes.

Why isn't there a pooper scooper law? Virtually every day I am picking up after dogs whose irresponsible owners allow them to go on everyone's lawn, but their own.

Conservatives will support income redistribution only if it makes the rich richer.

In regard to Saddam's execution, I understand the whole world hates him for what he did. George Bush went over to finish Daddy's job and he's killing all our soldiers.

I just would like to know how you can feel you are an open, honest paper when you will not print the positive remarks I've put in about David Gould. You people endorsed him.

Bring back the rotary phone, so we don't have to push one to proceed in English.

We need jobs in Auburn. Why can't something come into Auburn and bring us jobs and use that old General Electric plant on West Genesee Street?

Why not hire African-American teachers in Auburn who are less qualified than others? The Auburn school district has been doing this for years with the sons and daughters of former teachers and school board members.

Merrill Badman, no matter how popular the elected official, they all have their share of detractors. If criticism has you considering resigning you shouldn't have run in the first place.

Will the families of the people whose deaths are caused by the closings suggested by the Berger Commission and voted on by the politicians, be able to sue them?

To the person in the big SUV traveling west on Turnpike Road just east of Route 34, at about 7:45 a.m. Wednesday morning - you lost control of your vehicle by going too fast and nearly killed me. I am very happy your back wheels caught in the ditch and you didn't through your negligence come across the road and cause a tragedy for my family and perhaps yours - slow down.

It's laughable how Auburn's liberal council members and liberals in general are so adamant in their refusal to add any new police officers that are badly needed. But they keep pouring new employees and money into unnecessary positions in Auburn, just for political patronage.

If Cuddeback was as ambitious chairing the public works committee as he is at spending time spouting off for Fearon returning as legislative chair, then we might not be in such a mess with asbestosgate.

Dozens of prescription drugs are targeted by pharmaceutical companies directly to the consumer. With prime-time advertising rates as they are, hundreds of millions of dollars could be saved and applied to reducing the costs of prescriptions if the companies returned to targeting the doctors in their journals instead of doing an end-run around them and using the ignorant public to “help” their doctors diagnose and prescribe.

Maybe it's not obvious that we need more officers, but what is obvious is how many police cars can be seen day after day parked at the same residences for extended periods of time.

John Chick, give up the name of the people who are responsible for the asbestos problem. You have taken enough abuse and it is time for somebody else to be crucified.

I can't understand why Judy Ducayne felt the need to write a column defining who she is and what she believes in. Don't worry, Judy, your previous columns have defined you better than any direct quotes from you ever could.

Why are people too lazy to put away their own shopping carts? It's a real safety hazard to leave a cart out in the middle of the parking lot, and they block parking spaces.

There is an old western proverb, “the first pancake is always a lump.” But hasn't every decision George Fearon has made as chairman seemed to get lumpier?

You would think that one who is clever enough to afford a Cadillac Escalade would know how to legally navigate a traffic circle. Also, you would think The Citizen would publish a traffic circle diagram and educate those who drive it as if it were a free-for-all!

" I have only had contact with the Feral Cats Friends (or Friends of Feral Cats or whatever the name was) once -- they seem to be as shy about human contact as the feral cats they seek to help -- don't really understand why. But persistence pays off -- I was in touch with them via e-mail, years ago, but never in person or by phone. There are many organizations across the country who deal with feral cats -- perhaps one needs to start there? SPCAs across the country are very different from branch to branch, but I am not sure they take feral cats at all, at least not locally. "

" To Friend to all living creatures ty, I donate frequently to the SPCA on York St which is at cat capacity. And the other place: the feral cat people/organization dont phone back when messages are left. "

" There is a group working with feral cats in the Auburn area (don't have more info, sorry) -- last I heard, they could use more funding to deal with the situation as well as might be -- to the benefit of both humans and animals. If it interests you, you might look into it -- helping or giving a donation. "

" And while I am on the subject of our city looking yucky - how about all of the nasty feral cats roaming around? Have you ever tried to call one of these agencies that claim to help? - no answer ! "

" Why do all of our carefully separated recyclables get mindlessly tossed in the back of a trash truck week after week? Is the city really selling this commodity or is it a hoax? "

" How about in the spring, we form a task force to clean up certain neighborhoods one day monthly ? Who's with me to beautify this city? "

Nature lover wrote on Jan 3, 2007 9:14 AM:

" In reply to disgusted, I agree that the appearance of our city is getting nasty and not because of all the cardboard. There seems to be trash all over, dog crap dropped without pickup, no curbs so lawns are ruined - sad ! "

APD wrote on Jan 3, 2007 7:21 AM:

" I can totally understand frustration from the general public when it comes to marked cars and seeing them in places the general public "assumes" they should not be. I work for the county and drive a county car. I get turned into the COB for being at the mall with the car, or being at Wegmans with the car, stuff like that. However what the general public does not know is that the clients I work with need groceries, they need help getting thier Christmas presents at the mall. SO just because you see APD car or a County car somewhere you dont think they belong, just remember YOU dont know it all and have no idea what or why these vehicles are parked where they are. Mind your own business and quit trying to make trouble. We all have enough trouble in life without added nonsense! "

" Hey Murray-- The pope will not get to heaven any quicker than me. He was an elected official by a group of men. He is a good leader, and thats about it. Why would anyone with half a brain call him the "Holy Father" and kiss his feet? God mad all of us equal--sinners by human nature. The pope is a sinner just like you and me, your kids, George Bush, Saddam....... "

SUVs stink wrote on Jan 2, 2007 2:36 PM:

" SUVs eat gas, have headlights which are too high and blind other drivers and are so big you can't see traffic that's coming if you have the misfortune to get stuck behind one. Of course there are safe and cautious SUV drivers too, but there are a lot of them who somehow think they become invincible when they get behind the wheel of those big things, and get more swagger than caution in their driving, such as the driver who nearly ran the above reader off the road. I raised two large sons in nothing bigger than a Toyota -- there is no need for those big, pretentious, obnoxious, gas-guzzling, unsafe and environmentally irresponsible vehicles which pump their drivers up on some kind of macho trip. Get a hybrid and make it a small one -- and remember your drivers ed lessons! "

Exhausted from Auburn Residents Useless Complaints wrote on Jan 2, 2007 1:37 PM:

" It seems that no one in Auburn is happy unless they can complain about everything and the most unimportant items. I guess, when averyone around you is exhausted from hearing you, you need to go to the paper. All these residents in Auburn need to get a life and stop complaining. Life and everything else around you could be worse. As for jobs, what on earth does Auburn have to offer a big corporation to move there? Absolutely nothing! "

Brew wrote on Jan 2, 2007 1:00 PM:

" The drivers of 4 wheel drive SUVs should realize that although they can accelerate faster they cannot stop any faster. In fact their improved traction allows them to control their vehicles at higher speeds and makes it harder to stop. An SUV driven by a poor driver is an accident waiting to happen. You should be aware that you must use the same caution as any driver on the road. "
