New Year's night was a hectic one for the Auburn Police Department, with the department responding to as many incidents overnight as it normally would respond to within a 24-hour period.
The incidents included a stabbing at Spirits Tavern at 20 State St. and an assault near Spring and Barber streets.

Victims of the two incidents needed medical treatment at Auburn Memorial Hospital.

The APD reported 45 incidents between 4 p.m. Sunday and 7 a.m. Monday.

On average, it handles 50 incidents in a 24-hour period.

Officers responded to multiple fights, domestic incidents, vandalism complaints, traffic accidents and 911 calls.

The APD was notified around 2:40 a.m. Monday that a stabbing victim had come to Auburn Memorial Hospital's emergency room for treatment. The 28-year-old man had a five-inch laceration in his lower abdomen from a fight between 2 to 2:30 a.m. at Spirits, police said. The man required several sutures and medical staples to close the wound caused by a sharp object. He was treated and released.

Police said a tentative suspect was identified, but the investigation is continuing.

Several men assaulted a victim around 2:45 a.m. near Spring and Barber streets, police reported. Some of the assailants were allegedly armed with sticks, but police said it wasn't clear if the sticks were used in the assault. The victim suffered nonlife-threatening head injuries and was treated Auburn Memorial Hospital.

The investigation was continuing into this incident as well.

Anyone with information about any of these incidents is asked to call the APD at 253-3231.

Also, the New York State Police reported that it responded to several domestic incidents during the New Year's holiday.

The APD, NYSP and the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office said that New Year's Day itself was quiet.

" I agree with brew.. I think that if the community had something to be proud of, like some sort of togetherness it might be easier to get together and solve problems... but we need to work on getting some sort of community involvement period before anything can be solved about the crime rates. You have to have a "community" before you fix one. "

" To Jerry Morgan, I was not ignoring the crime rate and if you read my statement you might see that. I was talking only about the domestic and violence problems. The negative attitudes permeating the community lead to the population taking a negative view of life and has an effect on the mental attitudes of people. If the community has negative slants on life it will disrupt domestic tranquility. The City Council has very little it can do as the negative opinions also cause the taxpayer little interest in spending tax dollars on government. A strong community needs more than a lot of police and you can observe from the letters to this column that the citizens seem more interested in left turns at Dunkin Donuts than preventing crime. You don't control the police budget, the taxpayers do and it all falls back to community values. Do you get the picture yet? "

" Whether it be a group of kids, gang or an individual that enters the "twilight zone" and commits a crime, they should be charged, brought to trial and, if found guilty, be punished so harsly for what they did that it will not be forgotten. "

" Syracuse claimed not to have a gang problem and all it did was esculate the violence. Can't fix it if it ain't broke Bad attitudes have come to the small towns and it won't go away unless it's addressed. d "

Jerry Morgan Sr wrote on Jan 2, 2007 2:23 PM:

" Dear Brew, ignoring the crime rate will not make it go away. Furthermore talking about the crime rate will increase crime nor will it tarnish the city. I firmly believe we need to put more police on the streets, stabbings, assualts, robberies, muggings, drug busts, they are all here and they are on the rise. The City Council needs to address this problem immediately. "

Brew wrote on Jan 2, 2007 1:18 PM:

" I wonder if the violence and domestic problems have anything to do with the negative tone of the letters sent to the newspaper. These letters show a poor community attitude. The ones who care should try to correct the situation with positive actions. A yearly community festival such a homecoming celebration. Parades and activities touting the good things about the community. Family members living outside of the area could visit on the dates of the celebration. Class reunions could be scheduled. Chicken barbques, races, concerts, sidewalk sales and lots of opportunities for charitable fundraisers. Try to contact the Yankee Homecoming committee in Newburyport, Massachusetts. They have held a 10 day festival every year for the last 60 years and the city is about the same population as Auburn. "
