Each Tuesday, The Citizen features a health professional from the Finger Lakes community in The Banks:
This week, we spotlight Jon Lesch, chiropractor.
Q. What is the most rewarding part of your job?
A. Educating patients on how to treat themselves and releasing them from care with the knowledge and tools to prevent and/or treat future episodes on their own.
Q. What is the most challenging?
A. Finding the time to go to all of the seminars I would like to attend.
Q. Describe your ideal patient.
A. A patient who plays an active role in their care, who is compliant with his or her exercises and posture.
Q. When you're sick, would you want someone like you to be your doctor?
A. Yes, because I always try to give the best care to each and every patient.
Q. What is the best piece of advice you could give someone to stay healthy?
A. Read the Bible. It's overflowing with information on good health and how to live a long life.
Q. What's the most common misconception you hear from patients?
A. That their pain is due to arthritis or is muscular in origin. Even though arthritis and muscle tenderness are often present, it's extremely rare that they are the primary source of pain.
Q. If you weren't in the health care field, what career or field would you do?
A. I would probably be a teacher because I love educating and interacting with others. I have recently begun teaching seminars to colleagues and have found it to be very rewarding and fulfilling.
Q. For someone considering a career like yours, what advice would you offer?
A. There are many different specialties and techniques in the chiropractic profession. Shadow and study several chiropractors to find the philosophy and area of expertise that interests you.
Q. What's your ideal cure for the common cold?
A. Rest, fluids and a good diet.
Q. In your opinion, which medical TV show is most realistic? Which is your favorite?
A. I don't watch any medical shows. My wife asks me to watch Grey's Anatomy with her, but I'm usually asleep by then.
Q. Despite being in the health care field, people would probably be surprised that when I'm off the job, I _________.
A. Love to eat sweets. My patients would be surprised to know that even though I bug them about having good posture, I occasionally slouch.
