While many Americans choose to party their way into the New Year, Ron Bent and eight others will dive their way into 2007.
Five years ago, Bent decided to add a second scuba dive to his usual New Year's Day dive.
“Originally my wife and I started going on New Year's Day. But a lot of us are night and dry suit certified,” Bent said.
Regardless of snow, wind or sleet, the group of nine will dive into Owasco Lake, off Ensenore Road, Scipio, for their 20 minute dive. This year the water temperature is about 42 degrees, about six degrees higher than average.
“The dives have never been called for the weather. We've been pretty fortunate,” Bent said.
Each diver carries a device giving the water temperature, time and remaining time left under water. It is this device that will let each diver know 2007 has arrived.
Members of the Auburn Skin Divers Association and the Finger Lakes Scuba Club will participate in the groups' fifth annual dive. One member of the Skin Divers Association will be certified tonight, Bent said.
Around 12:10 a.m. the divers plan to resurface, with greetings from fans who will be cheering for the divers while they are under water.
The group will then head to Bent's home for a “warming up” party held following the dive each year.
