It's obvious Auburn needs more police officers

Wednesday, December 27, 2006 9:48 AM EST

I think it is time the council addressed the need of additional police officers. I was present when Chief Giannotta informed the council that his staffing level was the same as it was 25 years ago. I was there when he stated drug sales, burglaries, and muggings and robberies had sky-rocketed. I was there when he informed the council he had to prioritize calls for assistance because his department was short-handed.
Now we have senior citizens robbed in wheel chairs, homes burglarized, citizens mugged while jogging, men and women robbed at gunpoint while walking down the street.

We have to address this immediately. We need to take back the streets from the thugs, and the gang members. That's right folks, I said gangs. They are here and they are taking advantage of the lack of police coverage.

Call City Hall and tell them to address this very serious problem. We want Auburn to be as it was when we were little. We never had to lock our doors. However, these days, we are afraid to leave our homes. Thank you.

" Is more Police really the answer to this crime wave thats been going on????? What about people watching out for people, more police will help but I really think the neighborhoods need to get more involved in this also which I dont see at all happening. People need to be more alert and if see anything strange or even a strange young man or woman in there area observe or even call police to check out "

" I have never complained about paying for services. I have however, complained about waste in Government. I have complained about nepotism, and cronyism. I have complained about lieing to the public concerning tax hikes and budgets. And I have always supported the services needed to make our city a community which would be better for all concerned. We have had senior citizens roobed while sitting in wheel chairs, we have had our homes broken into, we have had robberies and assults, and muggings. We also have over 70 convicted sex offenders living within our city limits. We need the police, we need to protect ourselves, and our neighbors. It is time we took the bull by the horns. If our taxes are going to be raised, then my vote would go for extra police protection. I will make a complete presentation concerning the statistics reported to the FBI by the Auburn Police Department at Thursday's Council meeting. It is appalling. No it is scarey. This is a matter which must be addressed immediatley. In fact, council recognized this problem and agrees with me, as such, the solution is in the works. Thank you "

" Who's going to pay for the extra help? You will be the first to complain that taxes are too high. Where do you think the money comes from to pay for police? Quite your kibitzing. It's always something with you. You want the services but don't want to pay!!! "

" How are we going to pay for more police officers? What services or employees do you suggest be cut to allocate the funds for more police? Or how large a tax increase would you support to hire more police? Empty suggestions that Auburn should be the way it was when you were little are a waste of ink. "

" How? You complain that taxes are too high. School district results are disappointing in conduct, graduation rate, success. City Council members are at odds because all are trying to help your area but have different ways to solve the problems on the agenda. No matter what, you comment on all issues that I feel you are no expert on. These elected officials are caught between a rock and the back wall of criticism; where are they going to turn to. May I suggest that you back off on your comments for a while and listen, there may be a turn around on the horizon. "

" I see someone was "disgusted" because the city police did not call the state police in when they were all tied up at a bar fight. Well, the state police generally have but one car working the overnight shift staffed by two troopers who cover most of Cayuga County and parts of Wayne county. Good luck depending on them for asistance. That is their staffing problem. "

" I agree 100% and plan to call City Hall today. Not too long ago there was a fight in front of tha apt. building I lived in and a man was thrown on the hood of my car and set my alarm off. I called 911 and there was no response from the city police. 911 called me back and asked if anyone showed up. I of course told them no and voiced how disgusted I was with the police presence in the city. They said there was a fight in a bar somewhere and all officers were there. If i am not mistaken there is a trooper barracks by the mall, but I know how territorial city cops are when it comes to troopers coming in. They don't want to be "shown up" by the state police or have to do the job "by the book." Ask for help if you need it. The community is more important than "pride." "
