Fearon resigns, asks to be reappointed

One week from the Cayuga County Legislature's 2007 reorganizational meeting, Legislature Chairman George Fearon announced his resignation as a county legislator, effective Dec. 31.
In a letter to County Clerk Susan Dwyer, Fearon explained that New York State Teachers' Retirement System rules require him to resign as a county legislator in order to retire from the Union Springs Central School District and receive benefits. The state requires that Fearon cannot retire from one system while still employed under a second retirement system.

"I am aware that the Cayuga County Legislature, at their next meeting, may or may not choose to appoint me to fill the vacancy created by the resignation," Fearon wrote in his letter. "The voters of Legislative District 7 will have the opportunity to choose whoever they desire to represent then in the next general election in November 2007."

Fearon wrote that he will be sure not to exceed the county's 12-year term limit law if he is reappointed to the Legislature in January. The Republican caucus in November endorsed Fearon to serve as chairman again in 2007.

" This is the absolute height of Arrogance and a shining example of what is wrong with our county government. Any Legislator who votes to reappoint him should be run out of the county. "

" people, please don't write about something when you don't know the whole picture. Especialy with this asbestos thing. 99% of you don't know the whole story. You read about it in the paper and hear crap sitting at a diner drinking coffee. Know what you are talking about before you post. There is much more to this than ANY of you know. John Chick will fold....mark my words. Then you will know!!!! "

" Certainly interesting how people like to manipulate the law to their advantage. If the law states he needs to resign in order to get his retirement benefits then he should not be allowed to be reappointed unless he gives up drawing his pension. We need to start cleaning house in Cayuga County Government and what better place to start then at the top and work down. Start by NOT reappointing Fearon then follow it up by getting rid of the rest of the people who are putting Cayuga County into a fonancial hole. "

" Hopefully the US Attorney understands how much this county needs George Fearon to continue researching the removal methods of asbestos, how to raise taxes, and to have the county in the largest lawsuit in the history of Cayuga County on his watch with his blessings. BYE GEORGE! "

" George Fearon, and his Republican majority ARE the problem at the County Officer Building. It would be a blessing in disguise if he were not re-appointed. As it is I am praying the Federal Investigation will take care of Mr Fearon, and OTHERS. It is time for a change in leadership, it is time for the Democrats to take the reigns and demonstrate their own leadership capabilities. We have experienced the Republican screw ups, be it the asbestos fiasco, the water authority under Ann Petrus, where a public buy out was needed, to Ray Lockwood and his cronyism, and nepotism, and his double digit tax hikes. Contracts handed out to friends, to John Chick, who does what he wants when he wants with tax payer money. It is way over due for a change. Thank you "

" Its too bad people are confused about what arrogance is. People often confuse confidence with arrogance. Mr. Fearon is an intelligent man. He is very well informed and has worked very hard on finding solutions to problems everyone else was satisfied to just disagree on. His insight is fair and impartial, striving to find a workable solution so projects are able to proceed. His integrity is second to none! If you knew him as a person, not stray bits of information from The Citizen, Im sure you would see him as a wise, concerned representative. Mr. Fearon, I wish you the best in your retirement and suggest you stay retired; you dont need the thanklessness of Cayuga County government burdening you any longer. Enjoy your freedom to take on personal projects, but more importantly, take some time to enjoy your grandchildren and share your wealth of knowledge with them. Than you for your service! "

" George Fearon is a well educated man who looks at all side of the picture unlike some of the citizens who reside in Cayuga County. The Asbestos situation would have occured no matter who was in charge of Cayuga County. "

" I expected this resignation. But not for the same reason that it was tenured.I expected the indictment naming the Chairman of the Legislature would do the trick. "

" This is an absolute a disgrace. The laws of NYS were not written for these Legislators in Cayuga County to "CON" the system from the COB. If you feel you need to resign....then resign! Nothing like self gain "in your face"!. Just wait until the feds are through. I hear prison librarian's are needed? "

" He just did the County a favor. Don't aggravate the situation, leave him out & don't re-appoint him. He's an arrogant little man who thinks the public hasn't a right to know what really going on. The voters got rid of the other arrogant politician, Outhouse, so do us all a favor & dump Fearon for good!!! "
