City hall has gotten wrapped up in politics

Saturday, December 23, 2006 11:39 PM EST

Regarding your nasty Sunday editorial maligning the Democratic majority on the city council: The contentious atmosphere in city hall is the result of the political gamesmanship of the maverick mayor and his protege, the interim manager.
They seem to have forgotten that we have a council-manager form of government - not mayor-manager - council-manager.

Policy decisions such as the hiring of the entire legal staff should include consultation with the council members.

Some had never met the rumored appointees, much less interviewed them.

It is also patently unfair for the temporary manager to act as an independent agent to hire three attorneys who would of necessity rearrange their current work situations to accept city positions with no guarantee of employment beyond the tenure of the person selecting them.

In fact, the wisdom of accepting a position under those circumstances could be questioned.

And how exactly was the decision made to hire three lawyers for what had been two lawyer vacancies?

If the mayor, council member Matt Smith and your newspaper want to fume, so be it.

The process was an illogical mess and the Democrats put a stop to it the only way they could.

" In all my years of union contracts dealings, I always said that there is NO PIE IN THE SKY, SO LETS KEEP THE TALKS ON THE GROUND. And as the talks went on during the followings days, I always sense that 'there was a skunk in the woodpile' and that my friends IS WHAT SOME COUNCILS SENSE. The problem lies---can they smoke them out. "

" And what makes you think that Mr. Smith and Lattimore are not playing politics? They have been trying to hire their friends and supporters since they have taken office. They were successful with Long, and now they seem to have lost Graney as one of their supporters which nas thrown the monkey wrench into their "take-over" machine. The joke is that this is what we have available to elect for our governmental leaders. Smith will go down as one of the most damaging officials in city's history.Lattimore is already there. "

" Thank God for people like Matt Smith. I shudder to think of how much would be swept under the rug, if not for him. "

" With the exception of (Mr. Smith) from the mayor to the councilors, You all need to do what you were elected to do. OH! By the way ,that was to represent the people, not to play foolish ,childish political games with each other. Your conduct at times has been an absolute "joke". Also if you can't accomplish choosing a new corporate councilor, then hire someone in the city that you are supposed to be running.I cannot imagine why you would even consider going elsewhere. You all need to wake up!!!!!!!!! "
