Public wants a Merry Christmas

It's encouraging to see that when people organize themselves into action, they can still make things happen for the good. And it doesn't necessarily take great numbers - just sincere, well-intentioned citizens with a common goal.
When they changed “Christmas” to “Holiday,” it became clear to many people that things had gone too far. We had already taken prayer out of the schools; of course, immediately after 9/11 thousands of schools across the country broke that law. We watched as the Ten Commandments were ripped off the walls of our courtrooms. Now we're waiting until “In God we trust” is erased from our currency and for the ACLU to have the “Pledge of Allegiance” ruled unconstitutional and criminal because it contains the phrase “one nation, under God.”

But none of us ever envisioned a time when it would be considered inappropriate, even insulting, to use the word “Christmas.” After all, Christmas is ... well ... Christmas. It isn't just some generic season of gift-giving, mistletoe and eggnog. It is the celebration of the birth of Christ. All the other trappings of the season flow out of that.

That's why it was disappointing to shop our stores here in Auburn and Cayuga County last Christmas to see that the Christmas trees had become holiday trees, and the only acceptable greeting was “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas.”

We know that our nation was founded on Christian ideas and principles. The writings of the founding fathers are filled with references to God and Jesus. That's the reason why our public schools are very careful not to emphasize these writings, but to stick with secondary sources and information. But it was the Christian consensus in America that carried us for 200 years and made us a great nation.

Last year shoppers rebelled against the trend to steal Christmas from our culture and hit stores right where it hurt them the most - in the cash register. It's the only way to get their attention and this time it actually worked. Christmas is back. This year when shopping in Auburn we once again see Christmas trees and sign that say “Merry Christmas.”

The list of stores making the switch back to Christmas is impressive: Wal-Mart, Target, Macy's.

Certainly Christmas has become over-commercialized but since that's where the culture is, it's the perfect place to fight this battle. Maybe after being assertive on this commercial level we can begin to help Americans to re-discover the true meaning of Christmas: Christmas has always been about the love of God, alive in the hearts of men.

When we try to eliminate God from the idea of Christmas we take the very heart and soul out of the season. Congratulations to those citizens who let their voices be heard and created a positive change in America. Merry Christmas!

" From a consumer standpoint, if I were a member of a religion other than Christianity, and my religion celebrated a sacred holiday in December, I would most certainly not patronize any retailer that that only regcognized Christmas. No one is trying to "steal" Christmas Judy and if you had a sense of any reality except your own small little world YOU wouldn't be so quick to demand that the "holiday season" exclude all but Christianity. Oh and for the record, our "founding fathers" excluded everyone except white, male protesants. They would have excluded you too. "

" Well Judy batting 10 for 10 I see. I my self like the Happy Holidays, because that way no matter who I might be addressing if they might be Christian, Jewish, Pagan or what ever the case might be, they are celebrating something and it is so genetic it suits everyone. I don't do it because it is correct but because it allows me to wish everyone a happy time. So I will close this now with Judy Blessed Be. Btw in case Judy you may think I just gave you a christian hug there. It was a closing used by Pagans when they leave. "

" Gary, I agree! Why is "Happy Holidays" suddenly offensive? These evangelicals need to lighten up and get a life. Do they really think Jesus would object to INCLUSION? "

Xmaser wrote on Dec 22, 2006 4:53 PM:

" JUDY, JUDY, JUDY, you need a history lesson! Christmas is a PAGAN holyday that was adopted by the Christian church. Look deep inside yourself and you will know it to be true. Most of the time when people believe in something that no one can prove exists, it is called a DELUSION. Look it up in the medical literature. You call it religion and it is SACRED. We need more people who adhere to the "religion" of REASON to balance out the hatred and intolerance of religious extremists like this woman! "

" Why bother trying to point out reality to this woman or the editors who allow her to continue writing her hate filled articles just so they can sell a paper. I cancelled my Citizen subscription around the time she was allowed to bash Gay and Lesbian tax paying citizens. I do not read her articles, (even for free on line), but I love to read the public's reactions to her babble. "

" As I said before, and nobody commented. I always thought until now that Happy Holidays meant Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year. Am I the only one who thought that? "

Festivus wrote on Dec 22, 2006 12:26 AM:

" Yes, Festivus was fabricated by George Costanza's father on Seinfeld - so on the 23rd, "Happy Festivus!" My feelings are that this is the time of year for all of us to unite in some type of camaraderie that celebrates the season no matter what faith we espouse. Whether it's "Merry Christmas", "Happy Hanakkuh," "Solstice" or whatever.... Why does there have to be such controversy? As far as this column is concerned I personally think, Ms. Ducayne, that Christ would be pleased if he thought humanity could find some reason to celebrate the essence of humanity. I doubt he cares what we are as long as our hearts are in the right place. Perhaps you should ponder that thought. "

" There are many of us who are not Christian who celebrate other holidays at this time. It is offensive that my family has to be bombarded with Christian sybolism durring our holiday season that has nothing to do with Christ. The facts in this article are narrow-minded and blattantly wrong in some cases. Our country was not founded on Christian ideals and principles except for the fact that Christians hold some of the same ideals. Some of the most influential of the "Founding Fathers" were not Christians at all, but Deists who were very vocal about the need to keep religion out of government. It's very inconsiderate to expect that everyone you meet is a Christian and wants to celebrate your holidays when we have holidays of our own. "Happy Holidays" is a nice compromise for those of us who are not Christians, although for many Atheists, Solstice isn't technically a "holy day". I'm sure the author doesn't care about anyone else, especially those who don't follow her religion. She seems content to dismiss her fellow Americans with a simple snub. Happy Holidays Judy Ducayne. Happy Solstice too. "

" I attended church on a weekly basis. None of us have any problem saying, "Happy Holidays" There are many different celebrations this time of the year, what do all of them mean? Peace, joy, love and getting a long. Why go against all of it trying to stir up nonsense, Judy. "

Phantom wrote on Dec 21, 2006 11:17 AM:

" Wouldn't it be practicing Christian values to recognize diversity? By saying "Happy Holidays", no one is excluding those of us who are Christian, but rather including those who are not. People like Judy remind me of Don Quixote, now fighting the windmill of Christian decline. Christmas isn't going anywhere, so lighten up and wish your neighbors a Happy Holiday! "

Nice try, but you're not fooling anybody. Sounds like another disgruntled Pagan to me!! And Merry Christmas, Judy & family!! "

Oa wrote on Dec 20, 2006 4:07 AM:

" According the the Bible historians, Christ was NOT born on December 25th. December 25th was picked by the 4th century church as Christ's birthday, so they could usurp the pagan holidays that were being celebrated around the winter solstice. Kindly move your Christmas to it's proper day, and let the other religions celebrate their holidays without Christian interference. PS.. Happy Holidays! "

Ok wrote on Dec 20, 2006 12:12 AM:

" Here's a little lesson ... Holiday = Holy days. There's more than just one during this time of the year. Not every American citizen is a Christian. So, it's totally appropriate to say Happy Holidays. Now, please tell me you can speak your own mind and not just repeat what you hear from Bill O'Reilly and the Fox Network. And I would recommend hitting the history books. "

MikeinMD wrote on Dec 19, 2006 10:28 PM:

" This is just another rant about the "war on Christma". Did anyone prevent anyone from saying Merry Christmas to anyone or prevent anyone from celebrating X'mas in your own way in your own home? About stores doing happy holidays vs Merry Christmas it is a busniss decision and not some evil thought about getting rid of Christmas. Just a thought, of all the great X'mas movies, tv shows, books etc, how many do the true meaning of X'mas? Not just being good or chartiable to one or another which is good(no doubt) but the true neaning of X'mas. The only is Charlie Browns Christmas...see Linus speach near the end. Just a thought Mery Christmas and Happy Holidays "

Mary Christmas wrote on Dec 19, 2006 12:15 PM:

" Wow!! You should wake up and smell the egg nog! To proclaime that Judy doesn't practice Good will only speaks to your lack of diversity. As one nation under God we have a GOD GIVEN RIGHT to proclaim what we fell and how we think...it's a free country based on freedom of speech. Christmas is Christmas and many celebrate it...I don't beleive in any way that this means there is no Kwanzaa, Hannukah, Festivus...the point is we have lost the whole point of the Holiday season...no matter what your faith may be. I will say Merry Christmas to people...that is my belief, and if someone were to wish me any greeting at all...I would be fine with it. The only hate I see being spewed is enclosed in your own comments...Merry Christmas WOW! "

A non-christian wrote on Dec 19, 2006 12:10 PM:

" Wow, don't waste your breath. Do you really think talking sense to this woman will make a difference in the way she feels. By the way, I thought that "Happy Holidays" meant "Merry Xmas and Happy New Year." "

Jerry Morgan wrote on Dec 19, 2006 12:03 PM:

" I think the only person spewing hate here is you! In fact have a little courage, and print your name, at least that would give your hate filled opinion a little validity. As for KWANZA do a little research will you? It was started by a convict in prison, there is no meaning it was just another attempt to install diversity. In fact there was a special on 20/20 concerning this man and his made up holiday, to bad you missed it. As for the rest of you vitral, come on over to my house, I have some mistletoe for you. It appears you need a little love. "

Wow! wrote on Dec 19, 2006 11:26 AM:

" Judy, let's take a peek at the holiday season, shall we....Let's start with Christmas, now aside from the fact that it is the celebration of the birth of Christ, it is also comprised of a myriad of pagan traditions that long pre-date Christianity. I hope Judy, that you don't have a Christmas tree, yule log or mistletoe lurking about. I'll bet you do though and I'll bet you associate these items with Christmas even though they have nothing to do with the birth of Christ. Moving on to Hanukkah (sp?), another DECEMBER HOLIDAY that again, pre-dates Christianity. Should the Jews then not celebrate their holiday because accordinging to your warped view we should only be focusing on the Christ child? I'm not even going to bother explaining about the Winter Solstice that has been celebrated for millenium and in some circles is assumed to be the reason that the birth of Christ is celebrated on Dec. 25. Don't believe me Judy? Look it up. And of course Kwanzaa is now celebrated in December as well. And there's Festivus for the rest of us...What it boils down to Judy, is that all of our fellow humans have the right to engage in festivities during the month of December that celebrate (and here's where I'll lose you...) GOODWILL TOWARD OUR FELLOW HUMAN BEINGS DURING THIS SACRED AND SPIRITUAL TIME OF REFLECTION. Your presumed exclusivity is pathetic and you really should start practicing GOODWILL TOWARD YOUR FELLOW HUMANS instead of spewing hate. Happy Holidays Judy. "
