David Simpson may only be 18 years old, but that doesn't stop him from doing a mean Elvis Presley impersonation on “Blue Christmas.” With a heart of gold and a mellow baritone voice, Simpson is a favorite with the crowd when he performs his Christmas medley.
Burritt's Cafe events coordinator Sherry VanNorstrand identifies the cafe as “a place where you can have a really fun time with music” with a family atmosphere, which will suit Simpson's set to perfection as he performs favorite selections including “Mary Did You Know?,” “Frosty the Snowman,” “Jingle Bells” and “Oh Holy Night” along with his girlfriend, Nicole Ferguson.
Simpson and Ferguson are both students at Roberts-Wesleyan College in Rochester, but Simpson is originally from Conquest. Ferguson became Simpson's bandmate for the Christmas gig when she printed out his songs for him and practiced with him. Simpson soon found that Ferguson's voice was a part of the set.
Simpson characterizes his sound as “more of an acoustic sound, an acoustic with Christmas spirit.” Normally a reserved young man, Simpson's mother had convinced him to play solo at Burritt's, where he performed on Aug. 6. He was asked to return shortly after his set.
Simpson has played guitar since he was 7 years old and has been singing since he could get the sound out. For four years, Simpson performed with the Christian School of Performing Arts, of Syracuse. His pride and joy is a Crafter acoustic-electric guitar, which he has only had for two years.
Strumming the guitar is not the only musical endeavor Simpson pursues. He and a group of Roberts-Wesleyan students have formed a Christian rock band called Barren Heights, which recently gained fame from winning a battle of the bands competition at the college. The win launched them to play at the Palace Theater in Rochester where they signed on for a regular gig. Although they call themselves a Christian rock band, Barren Heights is hard to define, with a trumpet featuring on some songs and a blues-jazz feel sneaking in every now and then.
