Grinnell sinks game-winner against defending champs

AUBURN - Kelly Grinnell hit the game-winning shot with two seconds left to give the Auburn girls basketball team a 57-55 win over Rome, the defending Section III champions, on Friday.
Amanda Daum had 21 points and 10 rebounds as the Maroons rallied from a 13-point deficit midway through the third quarter.

Grinnell scored 11 points total, and Caitlyn Jacobs had eight points and eight assists.

Auburn (3-1, 3-0) travels to Nottingham Tuesday.

Union Springs 45, Moravia 42, OT

Deven Gary led the Wolves with 16 points and 14 rebounds and Stephanie Jakaub added 11 points.

Moravia's Claire Hunsinger sent the game to overtime with a 3-pointer at the end of regulation, but Jakaub and Christy Nicandri hit key free throws in the extra frame to secure the win.

Hunsinger finished with 12 points for the Blue Devils, and Emilee Conner added 13.

Union Springs (2-3) hosts Marathon Tuesday.

Southern Cayuga 53, Marathon 37

Colleen Lukas led the Chiefs with 21 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.

Lianna May and Molly Osterhoudt picked up Southern Cayuga on the defensive end, holding Marathon's leading scorer, who averages 32 points per game, to just 19 points.

The Chiefs (2-2) travel to face Lansing Tuesday.

Skaneateles 47, Cazenovia 39

Staci Dudden scored 15 points, and Caryn Crary added 14 points and 13 rebounds as the Lakers overcame an early 12-4 deficit.

Skaneateles' Brittany LaVaute sparked the Lakers with a seven-point stretch to open the second half.

The Lakers (4-2) travel to Bishop Ludden Tuesday in a game that will air on Time Warner Cable Channel 16, at 7 p.m.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Union Springs 59, Moravia 43

Julius McClary led the Wolves with 15 points, Devon Brady added 14, and Mark Rodriguez chipped in with 11.

Moravia's Chris Schilloski led all scorers with 18 points, and Zach Hargett contributed with 14.

The Blue Devils (0-5) play at Groton Tuesday.

Auburn 66, Rome Free Academy 25

Jimmy Pitts scored 16 points, Dave Foltz netted 14, and Ryan Gleason had 11 to lead the Maroons.

Nick Chapman scored nine, and Damien Whitaker added eight for Auburn.

The Maroons (6-1) host Nottingham, Tuesday.

Cazenovia 55, Skaneateles 36

Eric Richards scored 10 points, and Gregg Cooper added nine as the Lakers lost for the first time all season.

Skaneateles (4-1) travels to Bishop Grimes next Friday.

FRESHMAN BASKETBALL

Auburn 47, Liverpool 43

Rob Watros led the Maroons with 14 points, Ken Byrd contributed 10, and Tom Locastro chipped in with four points.

Auburn (5-4) hosts Cicero-North Syracuse Monday.
