An 87-year-old Seneca Falls woman was immobilized in her vehicle for a few hours overnight Monday after her car crashed into a column at the Union Springs Central School.
Mildred Hayes, of 8 Chestnut St., had been driving home from her brother's residence in Union Springs around 10:30 p.m. when the accelerator of her car got stuck, Auburn-based state police reported.

Her car went through the intersection of Hillview Drive and Route 90, through a school parking lot and over a cement curb before hitting a steel column on school grounds. Hayes broke a femur in the accident, leaving her incapacitated until Hayes' relatives had called her home to make sure she had arrived safely. When she did not answer they began looking for her. State police responded to her accident at 1 a.m.

Damage was sustained to a brick outer wall and an interior wall of a locker room, state police said.

Hayes was taken to Auburn Memorial Hospital and then later transferred to a Syracuse-area hospital. State police said no tickets were issued.

" 87 year old people shouldn't been driving in the first place. Stop blaming things. Just admit to the facts that the elderly are dangerous behind the wheel. Poor cognitive skills are to blame, not accelerator or the breaks. Please take the bus or call for the Scat van..... "

" Its not snide its the truth. Everytime someone rams into a building or a parked car they blame it on the accelerator getting stuck. I don't even know if this is possible in this day in age. Are there any mechanics out their that can confirm this phenomenon? "

" Why do people feel the need to make such snide and mean spirited remarks . I would like to see some opinions backed up with intelligent information . "

" I suppose her brakes were broken too... "

" Why is it that the accelerator always gets stuck on older drivers cars? I have never had this happen. I guess if I hit a school I would have to come up with some lame excuse. Fortunetly there were no kids around. "
