An 87-year-old Seneca Falls woman was immobilized in her vehicle for a few hours overnight Monday after her car crashed into a column at the Union Springs Central School.
Mildred Hayes, of 8 Chestnut St., had been driving home from her brother's residence in Union Springs around 10:30 p.m. when her accelerator of her car got stuck, Auburn-based state police reported.

Her car went through the intersection of Hillview Drive and Route 90, through a school parking lot and over a cement curb before hitting a steel column on school grounds. Hayes broke a femur in the accident, leaving her incapacitated until Hayes' relatives had called her home to make sure she had arrived safely. When she did not answer they began looking for her. State police responded to her accident at 1 a.m.

Damage was sustained to a brick outer wall and an interior wall of a locker room, state police said.

Hayes was taken to Auburn Memorial Hospital and then later transferred to a Syracuse-area hospital.

State police said no tickets were issued.

" If Americans had any idea how many people with dementia are driving at any giving moment, they would take the bus. I am not saying this woman has it, just beware the boomers are getting older by the second, living longer and demanding the freedom they have always enjoyed. They will be the least likely to admit it's time to turn in the keys. Where's security? wrote on Dec 6, 2006 7:42 AM:

" Sounds like it wasn't the woman's fault, but the car -- her accelerator was stuck. The big question is how could someone crash into the school and no one noticed for hours -- that means vandals would have no problem wreaking all kinds of havoc and no one would notice. Not very safe security for a school. Not to mention -- how'd they feel if the old lady had died of hypothermia trapped in her car overnight or something? "

" I don't feel bad for her ONE bit. Why? That is why all of our car insurance is so sky high... Old retirees shouldn't be on the road in the first place. When your older you slowly lose your cognitive skill, thats a fact. This incident is not the first and will not be the last. Remember the old man in San Francisco? He killed many people, just because he didn't know what the break pedal was. Personaly I have been in too many close calls with old people not knowing what they are doing on the road. DMV, if your reading this, when EVERYONE over the age of 55 they need to have a specific test just for their age group. Complete eyes, ears and brain examination to see if they are fit to drive a motor vehicle, because right now our system stinks. Proof by a doctor should be enough to have the competent people drive instead of what we have now. For those who read this and say "oh stop picking on the elderly" remember SCAT vans are available. Think of this when your hit by grandma or grandpa on our streets of NY. Good luck to her? Good luck to you on the roads. "
