AUBURN - You're likely aware of the Knights of Columbus Council 207, Auburn's Catholic men's organization, and its club at 47 Market St. You may also know about the many fundraisers and charity events that are held there.
You might not know, though, that the Knights of Columbus (K of C) is deeply involved in reaching out to the community, investing its time and energy in charitable causes throughout Cayuga County.
On Sunday afternoon, the Knights proved their philanthropy with visits to two nursing homes in Auburn, accompanied by a handful of local dignitaries including Auburn Mayor Tim Lattimore and county Sheriff-elect Dave Gould, among others.
The group went to Northbrook Heights at 170 Murray St. and Auburn Nursing Home at 85 Thornton Ave. to sing Christmas carols, pass out cookies, and spread some holiday cheer.
“I was fortunate to have my parents until they were in their late 80s, so I know what the needs of the elderly are,” said Jack Conway, the K of C Grand Knight, from the club Sunday afternoon. “I'm just really glad to be able to do what we're doing.”
The K of C's community activities include the sponsoring of local sports teams, monthly donations to soup kitchens and hospitals, and aid to long-term facilities like Auburn Nursing Home.
But more than just donating money, the K of C regularly assists with the service of the programs, he said, volunteering time serving up soup and attending ballgames.
On Sunday afternoon, several Knights joined the dignitaries in the parking lot behind the club to board an RV provided by the K of C. The club also supplied a fire truck festooned with holiday decorations that led the way.
At the homes, the group greeted the patients, passed out holiday treats, and led them all in singing of carols.
“Throwing money at people is easy,” Conway said. “What's tough is having the people to actually do things. I'm lucky to have a great network of people who want to help.”
