The Philippines News service tonight said more than 500 bodies had been recoved from the ash-strewn slopes of
Hilbok Hibok volcano on Camiguin Isand in the southern Philippines.The volcano erupted twice yesterday. It still spouted smoke and flames today.

The future of education has arrived. The Distance Learning Network is in place and earning mostly rave reviews from students, teachers and administrators. “The program is really taking off,” said Joni Lincoln, audio visual technician at Port Byron. “Because of the teachers involved, they absolutely immerse the kids in learning.” The network links schools with sophisticated video and communication technology, allowing a teacher in a classroom in one district to hold a conference-type class with students in other districts.

The town of Sennett finally has its park. Gov. George Pataki signed a measure Monday to give the town ownership of 25 acres on Franklin Street Road that the town plans to turn into a park and recreation area. Pataki's approval is the last step for government approval.

Both the state Senate and Assembly had passed the measure earlier in the year to allow the town to take the land and use it for a park. The land was used previously by the Office of General Services.
Town resident Carla LaPoint approached town officials two years ago to ask them to build a playground because area youth did not have any place to play. Park plans call for playground equipment, a nature trail and eventually a swimming pool and baseball fields. The town will pay for equipment while it seeks grant money. A construction date has yet to be set.
