OWASCO - Two days before Thanksgiving, Emerson Park employees could be found throughout the park's grounds hanging Christmas lights and setting up a pavilion for upcoming visits from Santa Claus.

Emerson Park gets festive for holidays
Friday night, white lights will illuminate Emerson Park's grounds, all the way out to the end of the seawall overlooking Owasco Lake. Visitors can walk around the park grounds to see the lights free of charge from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday through Dec. 31 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.
Saturday, Dec. 2, 9 and 16 Emerson Park will host Breakfast with Santa from 9 to 11 a.m. Families can visit the park and enjoy a variety of breakfast foods donated by Wegmans. Children also have the opportunity to tell Santa their Christmas wish lists.
Mischa Sigona, Wegmans sub, coffee and pizza shop manager, has watched the same families come back to enjoy the breakfast since she began participating four years ago. Wegmans donates breakfast foods such as cereal, bagels and donut holes each year.
“This is a fun and inexpensive event to do with the family,” said Michele Lincoln, assistant director of Emerson Park.
Last year the event, hosted by the Parks and Trails Commission and Wegmans, added face painting as another attraction for visitors.
“We always try to do something for the community,” Sigona said. “The kids love this event, they get ecstatic.”
Advanced ticket purchasing is recommended and can be bought for $1 a ticket at the Office of Tourism, 131 Genesee St., Auburn, and on the sixth floor of the County Office Building, 160 Genesee St., Auburn. Children under 2 are free with the donation of a canned food item.
Collected food items will be donated to food pantries.
After working on the event for eight years, Wilson said the first breakfast is always less crowded than the final one. Last year Wilson estimated between 150 and 175 people attended the final breakfast.
“It's a great community event. We like to give something to the community during the holidays,” Wilson said. “But we wouldn't be able to do it without Wegmans.”
