Two Cents

Good luck to the Auburn Maroons football team this weekend from the folks from Southern Cayuga. Show the rest of the state that football is alive and well in Cayuga County.
The Christian who is currently on an anti-witch rant in the Two Cents section, needs to be reminded that the Christian church has preached hatred against homosexuals, Jews, witches, Free Masons, atheists, etc. for 2,000 years. And yet, wasn't it Jesus Christ Himself who said “love thy neighbor” and “turn the other cheek?”

How about all the candidates getting off their butts and taking down their signs.

The election is over; get ready for a hike in gasoline prices.

The contributors to the Two Cents complaining about the condition of Auburn's streets will really have something to say after a typical Auburn seven- to eight- to nine-month winter.

I didn't grow up around here and go to Auburn High School but can somebody please explain to me what the hell is a Maroon? All I can think about is Bugs Bunny bashing Yosemite Sam and walking away saying, “What a maroon!”

What a waste of space in the Sunday “The Banks of Lake Life,” to feature an animal and made up question and answers! There are many interesting people and their occupations out there, to spotlight.

" in order to play on a sports team you have to have at least a 75 average... students need sports to learn to be a competative person in the work field and such. yes education is just as important, but for once us Auburn students have something to be proud of and the pep rallies and jsut the whole school spirit and attitude makes us want to go to school. good job maroons! "

" When a sports franchise spends money on prospects and it results in winning thats good. When sports franchises such as the Yankees spend the big bucks and fail, that is bad. Leave the management to the pros and if you don't like the results then don't go to the games. The sport will survive without you. "

" Get your facts straight!! Auburn is not an F school....especially kids in sports. They are required to get passing grades to stay on the team. Since you are so smart....volunteer at the school and help the failing kids or just go to the football game and root for the team and shut up!!! "

" Basic economics is, supply and demand. Drives the price for a product. Gas prices have nothing to do with the past election. I can't believe people would fall for things like this. I know, Blame Bush even the blizzard in Buffalo was his fault. "

" I most certainly am NOT on an anti-witch rant. Try being a Christian, especially a Catholic teen, amid a group of anti-Christian witches in school lead by your ex-friend. It's very frustrating to be subjected to religious hatred when you've said nothing to offend them, yet they tell you YOU'RE the one who's hateful and close-minded. But personally, I don't mind witches who don't hate Christianity. By the way, I really enjoy Harry Potter and Howl's Moving Castle. "

" A maroon is a fugitive or escaped slave. Kind of ironic seeing as how they refuse to name the high school after Harriet Tubman. Just goes to show how ignorant our community really is, doesn't it. "

" When I returned home this past summer for my 20 year reunion most of my classmates brought up the fond memories of the pep-rallies, bon fires, football and basketball games where I performed as the Mighty Maroon. It was a blast. Many escaped slaves that survived the trip from Africa and found themsleves in Jamaica were referred to as "Maroons". Many of these survivors settled in Canada. go to ask.com for some interesting info. I am not sure if this is why Auburn has the nickname but it is very interesting. "

" I would like to congratulate the Auburn Football team on their great accomplishments. As an Auburn alumnus, it makes me very proud to see our town well represented. It brings back great memories. It has been quite an exciting year for Auburn sports with the football team in the states and the little league guys making a tremendous showing in their quest for the championship. Around 1981 or so an Auburn student and terrific artist, Ken Wilson, created our hero and mascot, The Mighty Maroon. Everyone always asked what is a maroon, and in 1985 The Mighty Maroon was brought from "The Inlet" comic strip to life as the school's first ever mascot. He was unvieled at the home coming pep rally. Students and locals loved him. Girls proposed to him. Sports companies offered endorsement deals(just kidding)His idenity hidden from most everyone. It's a bird, it's a plane it's Mighty Maroon people screamed. Rain or shine he was their for the team. With his maroon cape, the mask and the white jump suit he was able to rally the fans to great victories. Many times opposing teams through ice and drinks at him and cursed him, but The Mighty Maroon never showed weakness. (not as much as the offensive line anyhow.) It is commendable that the tradition is still going on and The Mighty Maroon still stands strong. The team and the fans should never underestimate the power of their local superhero. Have fun, enjoy the moment and continue with your winning attitudes.....and get behind your leader...The Mighty Maroon!!!!! GOOD LUCK!!!!!! " I enjoy the section in Sunday's paper featuring an animal up for adoption. I think it is great that The Citizen does this, and would actually like to see it in the paper every day. Us humans domesticated cats and dogs and it is our responsibility to care for them and make sure they have proper homes. If this is what it takes to get the word out, fine. Finally, I'd rather read about an animal with lots of love to offer than a not-so-interesting person. If I die a millionaire, guaranteed my riches will be left the SPCA and the homeless. Keep up the great work, The Citizen, letting the public know these animals you feature need homes. "

" Boston Red Sox paid $51 million just to talk to Japanese star Daisuke Matsuzaka. No wonder ticket prices, concessions and merchandise in sports are so high. Fans should go on strike until this ridiculous spending stops. The only people who get shafted in the end are the fans. "
