Fire caused by water softener
King Ferry fire officials estimate that $15,000 worth of damage - including a shot electrical system - was sustained at a home at the corner of Route 34B and Atwater Road during a fire that started around 11 p.m. Sunday.

King Ferry Fire Department Chief Gerald Warner said the fire's cause was a water softener in the basement that malfunctioned and shot water into the residence's electrical panel.

The residents safely evacuated from the second floor when an alarm sounded; the power in the house went out as they came down the stairs, Warner said. Firefighters from Aurora, Genoa, King Ferry, Lansing, Moravia and Poplar Ridge fire departments responded, Warner said.

It took the 60 to 65 personnel two hours to put out the fire in the basement and go through the entire home to ensure it had not spread.

Alternate-side parking starts today
