An accident on the New York State Thruway in Mentz killed a truck driver and created heavy traffic through some northern Cayuga County communities Wednesday.
The crash occurred at about 2:30 p.m. about three miles west of the Weedsport interchange.
Syracuse-based State Police said a truck ran into the back of a construction vehicle that was being used to paint stripes on the roadway.
The driver of the truck, Phillip Newcomb, 60, from Bridgeport, was killed.
According to the state police, the cause of the crash was under investigation.
All eastbound lanes of the Thruway were closed after the crash and motorists were directed to detour from interchange 41 in Seneca County through Port Byron and Weedsport to interchange 40 in Weedsport.
According to the state Thruway Authority, one eastbound lane reopened at about 4:30 p.m. but one lane remained closed both eastbound and westbound as state police continued to investigate the crash. Eastbound Thruway traffic was still backed up several miles Wednesday evening.
