AUBURN #- The girls of the Auburn Pop Warner Pee-Wee and Junior Midget cheerleading teams have been hard at work, honing their routines in time for this coming weekend's competitions in Trenton, N.J.
After impressive performances in Syracuse and Utica, that saw both squads walk away with first place finishes, they have also been working with various fundraisers over the past several weeks to earn the $7,000 they will need to take both teams, coaches and assistants on the trip.
The girls have been hosting numerous chicken barbecues, pasta dinners and raffles and candy sales.
Bright and early ever Saturday for the past three weeks a dedicated group of parent volunteers has also been lending support to this cause at David's# Field with a bottle and can drive.
Parents such as Cherie Cooper have long been committed to helping the cause of the cheerleaders.
#“I#'m on the board,#” Cooper said. #“I#'m also an assistant coach on the Pee Wees. But my daughter (Katie, 11) has been doing this for 6 years and my son played football, too. So I've been helping out with things here for at least eight years now.#”
#“They have really done an awesome job,#” Cooper said. #“They worked very hard at the competitions and they did such a great job and they have been working really hard to raise the money they need. There have been a lot of long hours. As parents and coaches we couldn't# be more proud of what they have been able to accomplish and we are glad to help them out.#”
#“It has been going pretty well,”# Cooper said. #“The weather hasn't been very cooperative, but we have had a pretty good response. Last week we had the truck full and we are only an hour into things today and we already have the truck almost full. People have been great helping us out.#”
This spirit of giving and supporting the girls has gone far beyond the bottle and can drive and has extended to all of their fundraising efforts.
#“We are just about at our goal,” Cooper said. #“People and businesses have been very generous with donations and helping support all of our fundraisers. It has been unbelievable to see the outpouring of support we have received and the way people have stepped up to help us out, it has been awesome.#”
#“The girls will be at the Fingerlakes Mall for the rest of the weekend selling candy,#” Cooper said. #“And all week people can still go to the Frosted Nickel and turn in their bottles and let them know they are giving their bottles for Pop Warner Cheerleaders, so we are still going to be busy this week, getting ready for Trenton.#”
