What appears to be a strike by a number of workers in the finishing room of the Auburn Button works began this morning. The trouble seems to be among the filers who walked out, claiming that their salaries had been reduced.

Actress Judy Garland was still in the hospital today and the Palace Theater closed down until Friday when it was hoped the sparkling actress would be rested sufficiently to return to her two-a-day vaudeville performance. The star collapsed during her Sunday night performance.

Mother Nature dropped a blanket of lake effect snow on Cayuga County's northern townships and villages Tuesday, creating hazardous driving conditions and shutting down area schools. Red Creek and Cato-Meridian central school districts closed after an initial hour delay, but not before a Cato school bus picking up its first run of students was hit about 8:30 a.m. by a snow plow in Victory. No serious injuries resulted.

The Auburn school board will take a final step toward approving two new purchasing policies this week. The board will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, at the high school library, where it is expected to approve a final reading of the district code of conduct and the new purchasing policies. The policies were presented to the board in response to recommendations made by the state Comptroller's Office after a district-wide audit earlier this year. A committee of board members - Judith Freeman, Kevin Days and Michael Stearns - submitted the two policies to the board in October. The board has agreed to examine all of the district's policies over the next two years.

The board is also expected to approve the formation of a school lunch committee, with board member Rodney Richardson serving as liaison between the committee and the board. Other committee members will include district faculty, students and community members.
