And the awards go to ...

Carmelo has inspired me.
In honor of Mr. Anthony's generosity, I've decided to give back as well. 'Melo gave Syracuse University $3 million. I'm giving you my preseason college basketball awards - no press conference needed.

Drum roll please...

Cut That Meat Award (athlete getting too much face time) - Joakim Noah's dad was a professional tennis player? No way. He could have been a lottery pick but decided to return to Florida? You're kidding.

Noah had a nice run through the NCAA tourney, earning MVP honors, but like Peyton Manning, you can only take so much of the guy on your television. The stories haven't started yet, but they will. It's only a matter of time before ESPN has Andy Katz camped outside Noah's apartment, doing live updates every 30 minutes.

All this for a guy who's undersized with a below-average jumper.

Carmelo Anthony Award (nation's top freshman) - With respect to Orange freshman Paul Harris, Ohio State's Greg Oden is not only the best rookie, he could be one of the best players in the country. The seven-footer won't be in college for long but is expected to have Anthony-like impact on the Buckeyes, and not just because he looks 35 years old.

Oden also attended Team USA tryouts over the summer but didn't make the final cut. The experience was invaluable for the 18-year-old but I'm not sure what it says about his abilities, considering he couldn't make a team that lost to world super power Greece in the World Championships.

Eric Devendorf Award (nation's craziest player) - Well, it's got to be Syracuse guard Eric Devendorf. He's not quite to the Ron Artest level of insanity but if you heard that Devo ran into the stands at Connecticut and started brawling with UCONN fans, would you be surprised?

Of course not, and that's why Syracuse fans love this guy. He's passionate and toes the line from time to time. He's cocky but good enough to back it up.

He's a trash-talker and would probably give an appendage just for a chance to drill a three in your face. Devo's also good at bringing out the Jim Boeheim scowl, something 'Cuse fans never get tired of.

God Shamgod Award (best name) - UCLA's Luc Richard Mbah a Moute. Try saying that five times fast. It's fun.

Terrell Owens Award (sleeper) - Tennessee's Chris Lofton is the best player you've never heard of. While Bruce Pearl's orange blazer earned the most press coverage out of Volunteer country last season, Lofton seemingly went unnoticed despite having a breakout year.

The junior sharpshooter averaged 17.2 points per game and hit 114 3-pointers last year. With G-Mac gone, Lofton's the best outside shooter in the NCAA and will earn the national attention he deserves.

Ron Burgundy Award (this guy's kind of a big deal) - North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough is fundamentally the best player in college basketball, and not just because Jay Bilas says so.

There are some guys that play the NBA game in college. Carmelo did. Dwyane Wade did. Brandon Roy and Randy Foye did in spurts last year.

You watch Hansbrough for a game and tell me he wouldn't be starting on at least 15 teams right now in the NBA. He's that good.

He's the reason the Tar Heels are preseason No. 2. Name me somebody else on UNC. You can't do it.

Hansbrough is expected to carry this team and he'll most likely succeed. Hansbrough isn't flashy but he is extremely agile for his build (6-9, 245). Plus, he's only a sophomore, which is scary in its own right.

Forget about Noah, this guy is walking away with the hardware in the spring. That or Devendorf's stealing it from him.

I wouldn't be surprised either way.
