Pair of Sennett businesses expanding

Construction projects have begun at two businesses almost across the road from each other in Sennett.
Champions for Life will soon welcome a 4,000-square-foot addition to its facility at 453 Grant Ave.

Half of the new area will house a Nautilus room with equipment Champions acquired when it purchased Auburn Nautilus in Genesee Street Mall.

“Parents were asking for something to do while their kids were playing tennis or soccer,” said Champions president Michael Henty.

Henty plans for the fitness center to pride itself on the same tight-knit spirit that sustained Auburn Nautilus and its owner, Jerry Nolan.

“He had a real concern for helping people get and stay in shape,” Henty said.

“So we'll be looking for a real commitment from people, not just diets.”

Champions, run by a non-profit organization of the same name, will install a hardwood dance floor in the other half of the new space.

Henty hopes to eventually host ballroom and break-dancing lessons there.

Movable dividers will section off additional spaces for martial arts classes and children's parties.

The addition at Champions required the paving of a new parking lot behind the building. As a result, crews cleared away the tree line separating the building from the nearby railroad line.

Seeing an opportunity, Henty arranged with the Finger Lakes Scenic Railway to set up a stop behind Champions.

Excursions running from Canandaigua to Syracuse will now bring travelers from those areas to Champions' backyard.

To welcome them, Henty plans to organize special family days at the sports complex.

Just down the road, O'Hara Power Equipment, at 480 Grant Ave., is currently constructing a 4,000-square-foot garage to guard equipment like utility vehicles and sport bikes against weather damage and vandalism.

Losses sustained over the last few years made the addition a wise one.

“It's an investment well worth it,” said Barry Schwarting, store manager.

The space will be shared by new machines and those brought in by customers for repair.

Construction on the new space began last week and Schwarting expects it to wrap up by the end of the next, weather permitting.
