Finger Lakes home to friendly people, slower pace of life

Thursday, November 9, 2006 9:47 AM EST

Each Wednesday, The Citizen features someone from the food service industry in the Finger Lakes.
This week, we spotlight Theresa Kustyn, of Nino's Pizzeria.

Q. What is the one food you cannot live without? Why?

A. Anything sweet, probably chocolate. It's probably passed down from my father, he had a sweet tooth.

Q. Fill in the blank. People would be surprised to know that even though I work in the food industry, when I am at home in the kitchen, I __________.

A. I still cook because I always have a house full of kids. I make as much food as what comes out of a restaurant.

Q. What do you like most about living and working in the Finger Lakes region?

A. The people, they're friendlier than in Long Island, where I used to live. It's a slower pace of life here too.

Q. If you were given a million dollars to open your own restaurant or bar, describe the bar or restaurant and what type of food you would serve.

A. It'd be family-oriented and serve barbecue food, probably.

Q. Where would it be located? Why?

A. Maybe Long Island, for the beaches there.

Q. On the day of your restaurant/bar's grand opening, if you could select anyone in the world to be your first guests, who would they be?

A. My husband and my kids.

Q. Describe your most embarrassing moment while working on the job.

A. When I picked up a box full of wings and the sauce spilled all down the front of my shirt.

Q. What is your favorite junk food?

A. Peanut butter cups.

Q. What have you learned are the top three ways to run a successful food business?

A. Having a good boss who's fair to the employees, having good food and providing good service.

Q. If you weren't working in the food business what would you like to be doing?

A. I'd probably be a hairdresser.

Q. Ughh. What's the one food that you absolutely can't stomach? Why?

A. Liver, I can't stand the smell of it.
