Congratulations go out to Harlequin Production actors Carole Estabrook and Joe Pine, as well as to director Bob Frame and author Ken Tesoriere. “Lena's Secret Garden,” part of last week's quartet of one-act plays at Cayuga Community College, has been invited to the Theater Association of New York State (TANYS) festival.
This year, the festival is being held on Nov. 17, 18 and 19, at the Charles R. Wood Theater in Glens Falls. Visit the Web site at www.tanys.org for more information.
Michael Arve, last seen locally in the Auburn Player's production of “Inherit the Wind,” will be represented, as well. His production of “Save Me a Place at Forest Lawn” was also selected for the festival.
Syracuse Stage continues its run of “Driving Miss Daisy” through the weekend. The play closes Sunday.
Also this Sunday, Ithaca's Kitchen Theater features two performances at 6 and 8 p.m. of its Teen Extreme Playwriting competition. Teenagers (seventh through 12th grade) were given a theme and had a week to come up with a short play on that theme. The competition for adults is in February 2007. For more information, contact Kitchen Theatre at (607) 272-0403.
Wells College will host The Cashore Marionettes at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, in Phipps Auditorium, Macmillan Hall. Prices are $6 for students, senior citizens and the Wells College community, and $10 for the general public; free for Wells students. Tickets are available at the door or from the box office the week preceding the show. Call 364-3456 to reserve seats.
Fulton Community Theater opens the Rogers and Hammerstein musical review “A Lovely Night” through Nov. 19, with selections from “The King and I,” “Oklahoma,” “Flower Drum Song” and “South Pacific,” among others. For more information, call 598-7840.
Armory Square Playhouse will present a script in hand reading of “State Fair Cafe” by David Feldman at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 26. This is a new play about the loves and complicated lives of the denizens of a Syracuse diner on the verge of bankruptcy.
Auburn Public Theater is preparing an end of month production of Dylan Thomas' “A Child's Christmas in Wales.” The production will be directed by APT co-founder Angela Daddabbo and will run for three performances, Nov. 23, 24 and 25.
The theater world is poorer this week with passing of critic, teacher and essayist Richard Gillman, who died last week at the age of 83. Gillman reviewed for The New Republic, Commonweal and Newsweek, and taught and directed at the Yale Drama School, where his students included Christopher Durang, Albert Innaurato and the late Wendy Wasserstein.
Congratulations to Austin Sayles who was recently named assistant to the head of casting at Fox Broadcasting.
Finally, best wishes to local singer/actor Bob Miller, recovering well, by all accounts, from a recent illness.
Play nice.
