Tear-dripping comedy.
That's how Norman Lee, student councilor and director of student activities at Cayuga Community College, describes tonight's performance at the Auburn Public Theater.
Comedy Jam, hosted by CCC Student Activities in conjunction with the Auburn Public Theater, will be held 7 tonight.
After seeking comedians through booking agencies, Lee asked Nigel Lawrence and Lamar Williams, from the Rochester area, to perform. Both comedians have made appearances on the Comedy Central network and other comedy channels. Both have also toured the college network, Lee said.
Comedians don't have specific themes but were not given any limitations as to what they can joke about, Lee said. Lee has watched Lawrence perform at a mini-conference and then decided he wanted him to perform for CCC.
“The jokes can reach a PG-13 level,” Lee said.
The college has already hosted comedy shows in the past that have received large audiences and positive feedback from audience members. Lee has also scheduled another Comedy Jam for March 29, 2007. Both events are free and open to the community.
“It's a nice evening out and very entertaining,” Lee said. “It's another way to hold a program for the community and is something fun to do.”
Tickets can be bought for $5, $3 for senior citizens and are free to all CCC and area students with identification. Generally, to see these comedians perform, ticket prices can range between $10 and $20, Lee said. Prices are subsidized so people can take advantage of the event.
“Past audiences have been large and a very mixed group of people. All ages and backgrounds attend,” Lee said.
Money raised from ticket sales is returned into the student activities budget to plan more events.
For tonight's jam, Lee is going to decorate the theater to give the show a fancy nightclub setting.
“We are trying to create a nightclub atmosphere so it can be a date event or fun night out with friends,” Lee said.
Pizza, soda and other refreshments will be available for purchase throughout the show.
“It's a great night out for anyone in the community,” Lee said.
