The rosary, a prayer treasured by Catholics around the world, was brought to life at St. Mary's Church Oct. 22, by members of the Rosary and Scapular Society and volunteers.

The Rev. Frank Lioi leads a living rosary at St. Mary's Church in Auburn Sunday. The rosary was presented by the church's Rosary and Scapular Society.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church considers Mary “the example of holiness” and the rosary “the epitome of the Gospel.” Rosary, which means “crown of roses,” has its origins in the second century, when lay members of the church prayed a series of short prayers in honor or Mary, the mother of Jesus.

The rosary is actually comprised of several prayers, including the Lord's Prayer, the Hail Mary prayer, the Gloria and the Apostle's Creed. A set of rosary beads is often used to help remember the order of the prayers.

There are also four types of spiritual mysteries that are remembered: Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful and Glorious, all of which honor events in the life of Jesus from his birth to his resurrection.

The living rosary at St. Mary's celebrated the five glorious mysteries, which are the Resurrection, the Ascension, the Coming of the Holy Spirit, The Assumption of Mary and the Coronation of Mary.

Toni Considine, the coordinator of the service, and Debbie Lovell, the president of the society, explained to the participants their role. Pastor Frank Lioi would read scripture passages at the start of each mystery, then readers, who represented the beads of a rosary, would recite the Lord's prayer, a Hail Mary prayer, or the Gloria.

As they took their turns reading, they stood beneath a statue of Mary, the patron saint of the church. She was dressed in blue and white robes under a halo of stars. The high, arched ceilings of the sanctuary contributed a church-filling echo to the voices of the approximately 50 people present as their prayers were carried up toward heaven.

For the Hail Mary prayer, the reader would say, “Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus,” and everyone else present responded with, “Hail, Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.”

This prayer is based on a passage from the Gospel of Luke, where Elizabeth, who was pregnant with the child who would become John the Baptist, saw Mary for the first time since her immaculate conception.

The service closed with the singing of “Salve Regina,” which means, “Hail, blessed lady.” The tune was based on a traditional religious chant, and the congregation sang it in Latin, a language that has a long tradition in the Catholic church.

This the first time we have done a living rosary, and we thought we would try it,“ said Debbie Lovell after the service.

“I wish more people would have taken advantage of this service,” said Marlyn Salato, who has only been a member of the society for two years. “I joined because a friend invited me, and I had a desire to be more active in the church.”

St. Hyacinth's Church in Auburn has been staging living rosaries for the past six years on the first Sunday in October.

“This event seems to be catching on,” said Teresa Dec, a member of the Spiritual Life and Evangelization Committee. “It gets the people involved in praying the rosary, and some of our young people portrayed the mysteries for us. We encourage special devotions like the rosary, and we invite everybody to come. There was a 'thank you' letter in the paper about our rosary, and that made us feel that we're doing something people appreciate.”

" On Nov. 11 the United States will once more be re-dedicated to The Immaculate Heart of Mary. What a wonderful thing it would be if parishes could have a living rosary on that day. We NEED the Blessed Mother now more than ever. God bless! Barbara "

" Joe Sarnicola's article is wonderful. Thank you for it. But I believe the meaning of imaculate conception in his the line, "saw Mary for the first time since her immaculate conception," is incorrect. It’s important to understand what the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception is and what it is not. Some people think the term refers to Christ’s conception in Mary’s womb without the intervention of a human father; but that is the Virgin Birth. Others think the Immaculate Conception means Mary was conceived "by the power of the Holy Spirit," in the way Jesus was, but that, too, is incorrect. The Immaculate Conception means that Mary, whose conception was brought about the normal way, was conceived without original sin or its stain—that’s what "immaculate" means: without stain. The essence of original sin consists in the deprivation of sanctifying grace, and its stain is a corrupt nature. Mary was preserved from these defects by God’s grace; from the first instant of her existence she was in the state of sanctifying grace and was free from the corrupt nature original sin brings "

" Wow! We also have a Living Rosary each year in our parish,"Our Lady Help of Christians", in Jennings, Louisiana on the first Sunday evening of October. We gather in our Prayer Garden and 67 members of our parish ministries and organizations lead the beginning of the prayer with the rest of the gathering finishing the prayer. Father leads the mysteries with our choir singing a Marian song after each decade. We all have a candle cup representing our prayer. Red for the Our Father, Blue for the Hail Mary and Clear for the Glory Be/Oh My Jesus. All other participants have clear candle cups. As we start our prayer our candle is lit. When all the prayers are said all candles are lit and all participants light their candles from the rosary cups. We then process into Church singing "Ave Maria" for benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. It resembles a mini Lourdes. It is right at dusk and is really breath-taking and heart moving. About 150 to 200 people participate each year. We have been doing this for the past 7 years. "

" I read this article on The Spirit Daily.com, which I read everyday. Mother Mary is our dear and loving mother and there is no Mother like her who cares, loves, protects and gives joy to her children who believe and honour her. Pray Holy Rosary every day and you will be safe from the clutches of Satan. I pray for America and all who pray for Amercia. May Mother Mary Bless America aboundantly and May Jesus keep Amercia close his everyloving Heart. Amen. "

" The Immaculate Conception was a privilege given to Mary when She was conceived in the womb of Her mother, St.Anne. Mary was preserved from having the stain of Original Sin on Her soul. God the Father wanted the mother of His Son to be in the "pure state" in which He had created the first humans. God the Son, Jesus, deserved to have a mother who had an immaculate (clean) soul; this is the meaning of "The Immaculate Conception". The Rosary is the weapon that will defeat Satan. Remember, it must be prayed with a loving heart to be effective, and not just hung from the rear-view mirror. "

" I believe that if more of us particpate in saying the rosary while meditating on the life of Christ, the world will see remarkably good things happen. Mary's intercession in prayer is tireless. She desires only to bring us closer to her Son, focusing on His life. (note about the article, when praying the rosary the response to the "Hail Mary full of grace...." is " Holy Mary mother of God....." I believe the paper misquoted an extra hail instead of Holy.) Thanks for doing the article. "

" How wonderful that this parish is having a living rosary! As a young child the parish I lived in had the school children as the living rosary. The children who were the Our Father beads wore Holy Communion dress and the Hail Mary beads wore the school uniform. We held it in the church . We were in the formation of the rosary. After the living rosary we had the Crowing of Our Lady with a crown of flowers. Each child brought up a flower and placed it in a vase at Our Lady's feet. This was a special celebration that we all loved. This event took place in 1955. What a blessing that it is now being renewed . Thank you for printing this stories. I found this story at Spirit Daily. com . I live in Texas. "
